SUPREME GEM 2ND IN MOTUKARARA WORKOUT
Supreme Gem could race at Addington on Friday night after running second to Hot Shot Lavros in a C0 and faster mobile pace at the Motukarara workouts on Saturday, August 13.
After tending to over-race three back on the outer early, Mark Jones gave the Christian Cullen mare a bit of rein three wide beginning the final 800m and she was up measuring strides with front-running Hot Shot Lavros over the last 500m.
Hot Shot Lavros (Blair Orange) ran clear in the run home to win by two lengths, with Supreme Gem holding second, two lengths clear of Buy Chevron Direct (Terry Chmiel), who outfinished Bettor Move It late (parked until the closing 500m) for third.
The winner ran the mobile 2200m in 2:51.5, quickening over his last 800m in 58.6s and final 400m in 28.2s.
Supreme Gem, who won her maiden at Nelson in a slick 2:58.2 for the mobile 2400m (1:59.4 mile rate), was spelled after finishing unplaced in a Nevele R Fillies Heat at Marlborough on January 14.
She was freshened again after finishing fourth of four behind Miss Moonlite, Paradise City and Dream Driver in a Australasian Breeders Crown 3YO fillies heat at Addington on July 15.
Mark Jones also reined the Dean Taylor-trained Captain Peacock to an easy win in the one-win or faster mobile 2200m workout.
After trailing Franco Radial early, Mark moved the former NZ Derby winner up to increase the speed over the final 700m.
They ran clear over the last 500m to win by 2 1/2 lengths, quickening over the last 800m in 59.9s and final 400m in 28.4s.
Trainer Dean Taylor intends giving Captain Peacock another trial then look at a sprint trip first-up as the pacer builds towards November’s New Zealand Cup.
