BABES BOY BOB OUTSTAYS RIVALS
Babes Boy Bob, who played the iron horse over the final lap to win at Methven on Sunday, October 9, will try and keep his good form going in a 5-win front race over 2400m at Ashburton on Labour Day.
Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones says Babes Boy Bob found the right race last week.
Babes Boy Bob, owned in Melbourne by Merv and Meg Butterworth, backed up a good third to NZ Cup nominee Terror To Love at Addington with a comfortable 1 1/4 lengths win at Methven.
After starting off 10m in the 3-4 wins Neumanns Tyre Service Handicap Pace, Babes Boy Bob moved up parked over the final lap to hold Datmymulligan in 3:10.6 (2400m), the leaders running their last 800m in 59.7s.
“He’s done some work last week which he doesn’t normally do, which was encouraging,” Mark said.
“We might look at Ashburton next week, then the Geraldine Cup with him.”
“He’s a good follower of speed so we’ll look at the country cups around Christmas time.
Mark opted for the lightweight theory on the grass track by engaging Ricky May for Babes Boy Bob.
“You can’t do much better than put Ricky on. It was good that he drove him the way he did,” he said.
Mark brought up his seventh and eighth wins for the season last weekend, with Ardlussa Express delivering as a warm favourite for the same owners in the 1-2 win Forbury Park Function Centre Mobile Pace on Thursday, October 6.
Mark reined Adlussa Express to a half-length front-running win over fellow Cantab visitors, Bedtime and Cullens Moose, in 2:46.9 for the mobile 2200m.
The Falcon Seelster gelding quickened over his last 800m in 57.2s and closing 400m in 28.4s.
“He fell in the right race and worked out to be a good weekend for me,” he said.
