SAVEAPATROL TO HEAD SOUTH AFTER WINNING QUALIFIER

Saveapatrol, untroubled to win his Addington qualifier on Monday, December 3, 2012, in 2:32.2 for the mobile 2000m, is to head south for his early racing this month.

“He’ll qualify down there for the Southern Supremacy,” said Burnham trainer Mark Jones.

The Christian Cullen gelding, also Harness plus eligible, was shaping as his best 2YO in the stable last term, until problems arose.

Saveapatrol add qualifierMark says it may have been a blessing he had to be put aside.

Bred by Australian Peter Chambers from the good Falcon Seelster mare Rondel Franco (1:51.6, US, 37 wins incl. 36 in America for $684,003), Saveapatrol was on-sold by Mr Chambers to fellow stable client Grant Hatton, after being found to have hock and knee problems.

“He had bone chips taken off his hocks and has his knees operated on as well,” Mark said.

“When we got him vetted the vets said he was a risk, but Peter Chambers was happy to let him go as not many would have bought him with those faults.”

“His knees look good now but he’s got short legs for his body. He was a colt when Grant bought him but we had to geld him because he was going to be too top-heavy.”

Saveapatrol was unhurried early from a wide gate in Monday’s qualifier, settling at the rear of the six horse line-up.

Mark had him rolling at the 1200m, taking control at the 900m and he was too good over the closing stages, coming clear by four lengths from Cheyenne Warrior.

He rated 2:02.7 for the mobile 2000m, quickening over his last 800m in 58.2s and his final 400m in 29.2s.

Mark is also to send Itz Nosurprisesthere on the south circuit, along with either Christian Seel or Jolene Franco, the latter two also trialling on Monday.

Itz Nosurprisesthere was freshened after running a sound fifth in Adore Me’s NZ record run over 1700m (1:55.3 mile rate) in a Forbury Sires Stakes Fillies Heat on October 21.

The McArdle filly will look to qualify for the Southland Oaks.

“Regan will also probably send Strata Star and Champagne Driller south, so we’ll have a bit of a team going,” he said.

Christian Seel led up from a stand to easily beat three others in the one or more wins handicap pace.

She ran the 2600m in 3:26.1, quickening over her last 800m in 59.8s to run three lengths clear of Lady Lizzie and Montenegro.

Alex rewarded at Addington

WELL-TIMED LATE FINISH FROM ALEX

Alex, rewarded for consistency in the 1-win Dakins Rent A Loo Christmas Party Mobile Pace at Addington on Friday, November 30, will continue to race for the Mark Jones stable for another month, but will ultimately race in Australia.

Alexwin Add Nov 20“His owner Greg Brodie will race him over there. He’ll do a good job in suitable races there,” said trainer Mark Jones.

“He’s not a star, but a good honest horse,” he said.

Friday’s win by Alex, a brother to good-winning mare Glenferrie Alexis (1:55.9, Aust) and the capable Jackaroozy (1:56.2, Aust), was a change of luck for Mr Brodie, who recently had capable mare Holme Fire sidelined for four months with a hip injury.

Mr Brodie, who has raced a host of topline pacers including the former Bruce Negus-trained stars, Courage Under Fire and Franco Hat Trick, has 10 horses with Burnham trainer Mark Jones, but Mark said they’ll be looking to change tack a little.

“We’ll try and change quantity for quality. I’d rather have three quality ones for Greg, so we’ll be on the lookout to get him some better ones,” Mark said.

Alex, a 4YO gelding by Mr Brodie’s former champion youngster Courage Under Fire from Alegria (Caprock-Miesque), took his record to three wins and eight placings, for $19,579 in stakes, with Friday’s win.

He settled beyond midfield from a second row alley, and was relegated to last with a lap to run.

Still last at the 400m, Mark had the last say, bringing Alex home with a well-timed late run wide to wear down Vanilla Rose and Angus Bromac in a useful 3:16.3 (2:01.4 mile rate).

The win brought up the 13th win of the season from only 66 starters for the Mark Jones stable, and was Mark’s 23rd driving win for the season.

Selected NZ races qualify for NSW features

HRNZ MEDIA RELEASE, NOVEMBER 29, 2012

NZ RACES QUALIFY TO EARN STARTS IN NSW FEATURES

In conjunction with the New South Wales Harness Racing Club (NSWHR), Harness Racing New Zealand is pleased to announce that New Zealand horses will be able to qualify directly for two Australian $200,000 feature races.

LADYSHIP MILE

The Cordina Chickens Ladyship Mile is a Group 1 invitation race for mares that is to be run at Tabcorp Park, Menangle on 3 March 2013. Winners of the following Group 1 New Zealand races will be extended a direct invite by NSWHR to the Ladyship Mile:

  • Rosslands Queen Of Hearts, Auckland TC 14 December 2012, $100,000
  • PGG Wrightson NZ Breeders Stakes, NZMTC 1 February 2013, $100,000

CHARIOTS OF FIRE

The SEW Eurodrive Chariots of Fire is a Group 1 invitational race for four-year-olds that is also to be staged at Tabcorp Park, Menangle on 3 March 2013. The New Zealand qualification races for this event are the following Group 2 races:

  • Jardine Bloodstock 4 & 5YO Futurity, Cambridge-Te Awamutu HRC, 11 January 2013, $50,000
  • Pelorus 4 & 5YO Classic, Marlborough HRC, 13 January 2013, $45,000

As the two NZ races are for four and five-year-olds, the first four-year-old home in these qualification races, provided they are placed 1st or 2nd, will receive a direct invitation to start in the Chariots of Fire.

HRNZ is delighted with these arrangements as it gives a further option for horses to qualify domestically for these feature races, while also having the option of travelling to Australia and qualifying through racing in heats over there.

The support and co-operation of NSWHR in agreeing to this is very much appreciated and acknowledged by the New Zealand industry. The financial support of NSWHR has also seen the stake of the two four and five-year-old races increase by $5,000 each.

The programme of racing that NSWHR is scheduling for Sunday 3 March 2013 is outstanding, highlighted by the $750,000 Inter Dominion Final. The New Zealand heat for this is to be run by the Auckland TC on Saturday 16 February 2013.

THE LUTTS HOLDS TENACIOUSLY

The Lutts appreciated a significant drop back in grade from premier racing at Addington on Show day to score in the 1-2 wins All Signed Up/Kentuckiana Lodge Special Handicap Pace at Motukarara on Sunday, November 25.

The Lutts action Motu Nov 25The 4YO Western Terror gelding, the second favourite in an open race, was sent to the front by Burnham trainer-driver Mark Jones and held tenaciously by a head from outsider Anntoro.

Favourite Delightful Blue ran third with another roughie, Town Icon, running into fourth.

“My ‘ GP’ (galloping pacemaker) winning _ thats how bad my team is,” Mark chuckled after the victory.

“He’s my shining light!.”

The Lutts will now head back to Addington for another 1-2 win $3000 pace next Friday in his bid to chase down a bonus for the number of starts at Addington during the season.

“He’ll go round there to get the bonus. I wish someone would buy him for Aussie, but nobody wants him,” Mark said.

Frances and MarkThe Lutts was notching his second win in 18 starts for Max (former HRNZ chairman) and Frances Bowden, who were on-course to cheer home their gelding.

The Bowden’s co-bred him from Girlsjustwanahavefun, a New York Motoring half-sister to former smart free-legged pacer Nutwood (eight NZ wins, 1:50.6, US).

San Fran Lady, another they bred then sold to Australian interests, won again on Saturday night, taking out a $A11,000 M1 pace at Albion Park, Brisbane, in a 1:54.9 mile rate for the 1660m.

The Live Or Die-Emcil mare has taken a career best 1:53 winning mile time and has notched 15 wins and around $100,000 in earnings.

San Fran Lady’s half-brother, Princeton, racing as At Princeton in West Australia, ran second at Harvey on Tuesday. After winning four in NZ, he has picked up a win and two seconds since being exported to Australia.

Charlotte Two (Live Or Die-Polly’s Atom), another they bred, was sold after placing in two of her three NZ starts. She has won three of four starts in Australia.

Cup week successful for Club

SUCCESSFUL LINDAUER RACEDAY

Three days after a highly successful Cup Day at Addington last Tuesday, Lindauer Race Day (Show Day) followed the same pattern with a pleasing race day on and off-course.

Crowd numbers were healthy with some 7000 race goers enjoying their sunny day at the track.

These numbers contributed to a total turnover in 2012 of $3,214,047 exceeding last year by $397,070 or 14%.

Nz ffa lap to runThe Woodlands New Zealand Free-For-All over the mile was taken out by Gold Ace in a swift time of 1:52.6 just half a second outside the New Zealand record held jointly by Smolda and Kiwi Ingenuity and being the third fastest mile time ever recorded in this county.

The mile start of the race has certainly got harness enthusiasts talking with feedback to the club from horseman generally positive. The win in the Free-For-All took Gold Ace’s stake earnings to nearly $900,000.

Turnover figures in the New Zealand Free-For-All show some interesting reading.  Total turnover on the race this year ($324,771) was very much the same as last

season ($327,959) despite the lesser field numbers of 9 in 2012 compared to 12 in 2011.

This resulted in an increased turnover on a per starter basis of a substantial 32%.

It was unfortunate that a full field did not face the starter as Pembrook Benny was a late scratching on race day morning.

The Hellers Dominion Trot was won by the mighty trotter I Can Doosit. It was a huge run by Australasia’s champion trotter who took his winning streak to 17 and stake earnings to almost $1.4 million.

The way he dominates the trotting ranks at the moment, $2 million won in stakes could well be his for the taking within the next six months, with plenty of opportunity coming up in New Zealand and across the ditch.

The inaugural PJ Jeans Show Day Futurity at a not-to-be-sneezed-at stake of $36,000

saw the talented Democracy return to the winner’s circle. This concept received a wealth of support from horseman with over 100 pacers entered back in July and should only gain further momentum next season.

Later this month on 30 November the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will host a consolation of the Futurity with those next line horses that didn’t make the final vying for a $10,000 stake.

So a successful and a great carnival last week at harness racing’s headquarters. Bring on 2013.

CUP DAY FIGURES

Final 2012 NZ Cup Day attendance figures were 22,936. Corporate Hospitality packages were sold out at in mid-October with Lindauer Lawn tickets selling out a week prior to Cup Day.

These sell outs were in line with a substantial increase in pre-Cup Day General Admission tickets with this figure up 56% on 2011.

The turnovers on Cup Day also showed an increase on last year.

2012 Total turnover: $6,098,174 – 2011 Total turnover: $5,959,523. An increase of $138,651 or 2.3%.

2012: On-course turnover: $1,679,559. 2011 On-course turnover: $1,554,985. An increase of $124,574 or 8%.

Some significant increases were reported too in total turnover per starter when comparing 2011 to 2012.

2011 Turnover per starter: $37,718.

2012 Turnover per starter: $40,927, an increase of $3,209 or 8.5%.

Master Lavros wins at Cup trials

MASTER LAVROS WINS AT CUP TRIALS

Master Lavros began swiftly and was untroubled to win at the NZ Cup trials on Wednesday, November 7.

He soon led and drew clear to win untested in in 3:25.3 (2600m stand), picking up the tempo over his last 800m in 59s and his closing 400m in 29.6s.

He has been ticking over nicely since gaining a penalty-free junior drivers win for Regan Todd at Rangiora on September 20.

M lavros cup trialsThe big 4YO Sundon gelding is raced by Kyros Kotzikas, who enjoyed a stellar 1997 New Zealand Cup day winning the big race with Iraklis.

Master Lavros has been well placed to win four from only six starts, and still remains on a 1-win assessment to try and take advantage of his placement off the front in the 1-2 wins $20,000 The Recruitment Network Handicap Trot on Cup day.

He starts from the inside of the four unruly horses in a capacity field. Everything will hinge on how he copes over the opening 200 metres.

Wednesday’s trial was pleasing and comes on the back of an equally easy Rangiora workout win on October 27.

However, Master Lavros mixed his gait for his first few strides on that occasion.

He was too slick at the business end though, coming clear by 4 1/4 lengths from Imelda, trotting the 2600m that day in 3:23.2.

MASTER LAVROS BY SIX LENGTHS IN TRIAL

Promising squaregaiter Master Lavros would only need to step as swiftly as he did at the NZ Cup trials at Addington on Wednesday (November 7) to be very hard to beat on the big day on Tuesday.

“That’s the only problem. When he begins like that, he normally doesn’t do it the next time,” said Mark.

Master Lavros confirmed he is trained to the minute for the premier raceday by leaving his rivals in his wake by six lengths in the run home, with race rival Lucky Monarch next best, finishing on from three back, ahead of Sol Invictus.

The ‘Master’  trotted the 2600m in 3:25.3 after a cool easterly wind had freshened, picking up the tempo over his last 800m in 59s and his closing 400m in 29.6s.

BADJELLYS COURAGE SCORES

The Mark Jones Racing Stables notched their first NSW win with Badjellys Courage, who cleared out to win by 15.4 metres at the Bathurst twilight meeting on Wednesday, August 22.

The Courage Under Fire-Badjelly The Wytch gelding was sent out a hot $1.50 favourite in the hands of Regan Todd and was untroubled to lead throughout to win in a comfortable 2:03.3 rate for the 1730m.

He quickened over his last 800m in 60.9s and his final 400m in 29.6s to take out the $A5000 Shannon Springs Two-Year-Old Pace for his maiden victory.

“The stable is going good over there with four starts for a win, two seconds and a fourth, for over $NZ10k,” Mark said.

“The horses are earning a lot more money and only been there three weeks.”

Stablemate and older brother Jellignite finished second a day earlier in a $A7000 Cordina Chicken Farms Pace at Menangle in a 1:59 rate over 2300m.

Jellignite moved up parked over the final 400m but had to settle for a 4.1 metres second to NZ-bred Ashoka (Grinfromeartoear-New York On Sunday), who led and slowed the field, then sprinted best over the last quarter in 27.6s.

STABLEMATES SOUND FIRST-UP

Brothers, (My) Jellignite and Badjelly’s Courage, were sound finishing fourth and second respectively first-up at Tabcorp Park, Menangle, on Tuesday, August 14.

jellig_prelimJellignite (Regan Todd) was given every chance in the trail from the ace draw in the C6-10 TAB Number One Club Pace but couldn’t reel in the leaders in the run home.

Left Loaded (Darren Hancock) moved up parked and wore down front-running ex-Kiwi Im Fulla Luck in a fast 1:52.9 for the 1609m

Louis Lad ran on to take third, with Jellignite next after angling off the leaders back in the run home but just peaking the last bit.

BADJELLY’S COURAGE SECOND

Trainer Mark Jones made the trip across to drive maiden Badjelly’s Courage in the day’s opener, the Rydges Campbelltown Pace for two-year-old pacers at Menangle on Tuesday, August 14.

After showing good gate speed to lead from the six gate, they were outfinished in the run home by Art Major colt Apache who moved up in the open turning for home and won by 3.8m.

Mark rated Badjelly’s Courage well, getting away with good early fractions, but the winner was too good over a fast final 400m in 27.4s.

Apache ran the 1609m in 2:00.8, the leaders running their last 800m in 60.2s.

Mark also drove Sally Hemmings to finish fifth for owner Greg Brodie and Bathurst trainer Peter Russo in a 3YO pace.

After giving her  a good run three back on the markers, she was sound without being able to reel in the leaders in the run home.

OK COURAGE IN 1:52.7 MILE

OK Courage paced a swift 1:52.7 mile to win a M2-4 pace at Tabcorp Park, Menangle, on Saturday night, June 30.

The former Mark Jones-trained pacer notched his third win from four NSW starts when taking out the $24,000 Married To The Mob Pace.

The 6YO Courage Under Fire-OK Adios gelding is now trained at Bathurst by Peter Russo and was driven by Ashlee Seijka.

Former West Melton pacer The Big Mach chased him home, with fellow NZ-bred Matai Zinga third.

Other ex-Kiwis in the race were Flying Diamonds (fifth), Feels Like Magic (sixth), Cullens Crown (seventh) and Pay Me Christian (10th).

Jackaroozy, another handy winner in NZ when prepared by Mark Jones for owner Greg Brodie, was also in winning form in Australia on Saturday night, winning a M1 pace at Albion Park, Brisbane, in a 1:59.3 rate over 2138m.

NZ TROTTING FFA REDUCED TO 2000m

Addington Raceway and Events Centre and New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club officials have announced that the 2012 Group 1, $80,000 Seelite Windows & Doors NZ Trotting Free-For-All has a distance.

It will now be run over the distance of 2000 metres from a Mobile Start on Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup Day on Tuesday, 13 November 2012.

The race has previously been held over 2600 metres from a Mobile Start.

“However, after receiving feedback from some leading trainers and industry participants and the fact that the 2011 event was devoid of three of New Zealand’s leading trotters – I Can Doosit, the ill fated Springbank Richard and Dr Hook due to the race being so close to the Hellers Dominion just three days later, which is contested over the extreme distance of 3200 metres from a stand start, we believe the best option is to run the race over a shorter journey” said Addington’s Racing Manager Brian Rabbitt.

HRNZ MEDIA BITES, SEPTEMBER 24

Hi all, things are really starting to warm up now in harness racing circles. A whole lot of fresh, quality horses about to hit the tracks. No doubt the focus this week will be on Canterbury with the Avon City Ford Cup and the return of I Can Doosit it in the DG Jones Trotting Cup at Banks Peninsula on Sunday.
Also, it’s great see Jamie Searle(@SearleJamie) on Twitter giving out all the fresh information out of Southland for both equine codes. For those not on Twitter its a great way to stay informed and get hot oil on racing matters. You can also follow Dexter Dunn(@DexterDunn1) and Matty Williamson(@williansontrot) on Twitter.
Media Bites:
  • This Friday night we’ll no doubt see a great race at Addington in the Avon City Ford (New Brighton) Cup. Here are the names: Auckland Reactor,Franco Emirate (Ur), Gold Ace, Highview Tommy, Jarcullembra, Mach Banner, Mah Sish, Major Mark, Mister Presley, Motu Speedy Star, Ohoka Texas, Pure Power, Sleepy Tripp (Ur), Sushi Sushi, Zenola Seelster. Winner gets to walk straight into the Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup. There are some dual nominators in a 4-Win & Faster Hcp also.
  • Gold Ace turned in a sparkling workout at Rangiora on Sunday. He came from second-last at the mile peg to down Mach Banner who led from the mid stages. Privately timed Gold Ace put up numbers of 3.00.8, 1.57.0, 54.7 and 27.1. A perfect run heading into this week. Worth noting the likes of Mach Banner and Franco Emirate ran sub-2.54 2400m in the Vase at Addington two weeks ago.
  • Cran Dalgety has had a remarkable start to the racing season. He’s already racked up 17 wins from just 35 starts. He’s well on the way to another century. I ran some numbers this morning also and Dalgety has huge stocks to work with. I counted 37 three-year-olds in work on the HRNZ database. Currently there are no two-year-olds listed so the original figure could sore by the end of the calendar year. Cran is only five wins off 800 lifetime training wins in NZ.
  • The NRM Sires Stakes kicks off this week too with the initial heats being run in Cambridge and Addington. Always a great series the early three-year-olds generally put on a great show. 13 have nominated for Addington’s heat with Mark Purdon supplying four of them. Unfortunately just five have committed to a run at Cambridge.
  • Caribbean Blaster has been nominated to race at Tabcorp Park, Melton, this Friday night in The Gammalite. He’ll butt heads with the likes of Melpark Major and Jaccka Clive. Will be interesting to see how he fronts up against the Free-For-Allers and what impact there may be on next week’s NZ Cup rankings.
  • Fears of horse shortages have been allayed somewhat with the 195 individual horses being nominated for Banks Peninsula on Sunday. While race fields have struggled a little for numbers to this point with some of the bigger stables opening up their arsenals things are clearly about to change on that front. The spring influx of grass track meetings around the country too will nudge up the average fields sizes.
  • Change in conditions to NZ Trotting FFA – since it’s move from the traditional Friday the NZ Trotting FFA at Addington during Cup Week has been a mixed bag. The club has looked at ways to make the race better for all concerned and this year’s running will be on Cup Day (same as recent years) and be run over the sprint distance of 1950m. The race will once again be sponsored by Seelite Windows & Doors.
