HOLME FIRE NOTCHES 2ND NEVELE R HEAT

Holme Fire, first-up after a slight re-condition, claimed her second $18,000 Nevele R Fillies Heat, this time in the slush at the Hororata TC’s meeting at Addington on Friday, February 24.

The Courage Under Fire filly seems better since undergoing a minor wind operation after she won the Marlborough Nevele R Heat on mid January, missing about 10 days work.

She was sent out the favourite after a strong second at the Rangiora workouts last Saturday and proved too good on Friday night in the wet conditions for catch-driver Blair Orange.

Orange eased her to midfield early to get in the running line, three back on the outer, then peeled three wide at the 650m to range up to the pacemaking the Burning Question.

After going straight past the leader at the 400m, she kept going strongly to hold Gaylee’s Delight, who tried to go with her on the corner, but was left flat-footed for a few strides at the 300m.

Gaylee’s Delight rallied in the straight but couldn’t catch Holme Fire, who held by 1 1/4 lengths in 2:27.7 (2:01.8 mile rate) for the 1950m, the leaders running their last 800m in 60.1s and final 400m in 29s.

Holme Fire, the younger sister to open class pacer Pembrook Benny (1:53.4), furthered a good record for Queensland breeder-owner Greg Brodie.

This was her fourth win from eight starts, for $44,395 in earnings.

Holme Fire’s stablemate Christian Seel, the second favourite, was eased to the rear early and didn’t appear to be comfortable in the wet conditions. She ran on a shade in the straight for eighth.

The Courage Under Fire filly settled well in the trail for Scott Stewart behind Comply Or Die and finished well when clear for a neck second to Jackaroo Bromac (Wayne Higgs).

The winner moved up parked over the last 900m and held over the mobile 200m in 2:32.1 in the 1-win mobile pace, the leaders running their last 800m in 57.7s and final 400m in 28.1s.

Tiz Tough, four back on the markers mostly, was unable to reel in the leaders in the straight.

There is another Nevele R Fillies Heat at the Hororata meeting at Addington on Friday.

Stablemate Ardlussa Express also shaped well from a brief freshener in the 2-win or faster mobile pace over 2000m.

Also driven by Scott Stewart, Ardlussa Express settled three back on the markers behind Geo Star and Montecrengle.

However, Marlborough Cup winner Mister Presley, last early, moved up parked at the 800m, pressed to the front, and was too strong holding by three-quarters of a length, in 2:33.2, the leaders running their last 800m in 56.1s.

OK Courage contested the start of an earlier maiden workout, just for barrier practice, stepping safely but slowly.

Trainer Mark Jones intends running him from a stand in the Hororata Cup at Addington on Friday, then will reassess his future plans.

Mach Kana (Mach Three-Turkana), a two-year-old sister to stablemate Christian Seel (1:56.1), stepped out in the 2YO fillies pace.

She wasn’t hurried early and made some ground late wide for a five lengths second to front-running Donegal’s Lucy Creek, who paced the mobile 2000m in 2:40.7, the last 800m in 59.9s.

Once back on an even keel, Regan sent him forward to the front with 1700m left to run in the mobile 2600m maiden.

He was too good in the run home, holding Live Jazz (Ken Barron) by three-quarters of a length, with outsider Streamline Boy boxing on after having an economical trip for Amber Lethaby to run third.

‘TEXAS’ SUPERIOR STAYER

Burnham trainer Mark Jones has his sights set on a crack at November’s New Zealand Cup with Invercaill Cup winner Ohoka Texas.

Mark was in awe of the Christian Cullen entire for his tough race attitude following the win.

“He went great again. He is an unreal horse that you admire for his racing style,” Mark said.

texas texican workouts 001Ohoka Texas tangled away, losing around 20m before settling, but after working to the front at the 1300m, it was a case of the further he went, the more he gave.

“The 3200m is no problems. He could have gone another lap and nothing would have got past him,” he said.

Ohoka Texas held a spirited finish from Franco Ledger by 1 3/4 lengths, with Artiface tiring to run third.  Ohoka Texas was powering away strongly after the finish.

He paced the 3200m from a stand in the windy conditions in 4:06.2, running his last 800m in 58.3s and final 400m in 28.9s.

OK COURAGE RESUMES ON HIGH

OK Courage, who resumed with a half-head win over Cracker Black in the 4-5 wins Hecton Product 2007 Ltd Mobile Pace at Invercargill on Saturday, is likely to be taken to Menangle for racing before too long.

telemecaniqueBurnham co-owner Mark Jones says he wasn’t that happy with her after she resumed the 2-wins and faster mobile pace at the Addington workouts on Monday, January 30.

Telemecanique tailed the field throughout the mobile 1950m workout.

“If she doesn’t improve with a few more trials she can spell and work back through the winter,” he said.

She returns on a 12-win assessment for handicapping, having won $185,615 lifetime.

HOLME FIRE HAS WIND OPERATION

Holme Fire, a 44-to-one upset winner of the $18,000 Nevele R Stud 3YO Fillies Heat at Waterlea on Friday, January 13, underwent surgery for a minor wind affliction on Tuesday, January 17.

Trainer Mark Jones wants to have her at 100 percent for the big fillies races in the autumn.

He was very pleased to qualify the younger sister to open class pacer Pembrook Benny (1:53.6) for the big Nevele R final in the opening South Island heat.
Holme_F“Its good she’s qualified so I don’t have to panic now,” he said.

Mark was able to settle the Courage Under Fire filly handy in the open in the Marlborough heat, then gained cover at the right time when favourite Dancing Diamonds moved up parked mid-mile.

He bided his time in behind the leaders saving Holme Fire for a late dab with an inside run and she responded to grab front-running The Burning Question in the final stride.

Holme Fire stuck her nose out at the right time to win in 1:58.8 for the 1609m, the leaders running their last 800m in 57.2s and final 400m in 27.5s.

Dancing Diamonds was a head back third in a three-way finish, with Vanilla Rose fighting on wide out next.

Holme Fire, winner of a two-year-old Sires Stakes heat last term, wasn’t wanted by punters despite winning her lead-up race at Winton last month.

She has now raced just seven times, for three wins and a placing, for $34,495 in stakes for Queensland breeder-owner, Greg Brodie.

Mark notched a driving double on Friday to advance to 35 driving wins for the season.

He delivered early on the programme with warm favourite Cam Before The Storm in the Hirepool Maiden Mobile Pace, for the Tim Butt stable.

After settling back from a wide gate, he moved the McArdle gelding up parked beginning the final 800m and despite being challenged by Storm Breeze (trail) in the run home, held by a neck in a 2:02.2 rate for the 2300m.

TEXAS FOR INVERCARGILL CUP

Ohoka Texas, fast developing as a potential New Zealand Cup contender in November, will be put to the test over the extreme distance at Invercargill on January 28.

Burnham trainer Mark Jones confirmed he will send the Christian Cullen south for the $40,000 Ascot Park Hotel Invercargill Cup on January 28.

Ohoka Texas couldn’t have been any more impressive when he trounced his rivals by 7 3/4 lengths in the $40,000 Pelorus 4YO Classic at Waterlea on Sunday, January 15.
ffa show day 2011 067After striding to the front with 1500m to run, Mark kept the pace strong with Ohoka Texas, who had his rivals off the bit turning for home.

They won untouched in a fast 1:56.6 mile rate for the mobile 2300m, finding the line strongly over his last 800m in 55.7s and his closing 400m in 27s.

“That was pretty pleasing. He goes pretty good on raceay !,” Mark said.

Ohoka Texas ran a fast 2:46.7 for the full 2300m _ the second fastest in the Pelorus behind Likmesiah’s 2:45.7 (1:55.9 mile rate) for Mark Purdon in 2005.

Since teaming up with Mark Jones this season, Ohoka Texas has won four races from five starts _ his only defeat this term coming when beaten a nose by Magical Mel at Addington on New Zealand Cup day.

In hindsight, Mark felt he may have not gone fast enough with the staying 4YO that day.

In his three subsequent starts, Ohoka Texas has at Addington, Winton and Waterlea by a combined margin of 24 1/2 lengths !

Magical Mel was unable to get close to Ohoka Texas in the Pelorus 4YO Classic at Marlborough, but won the race for a distant second.

After being given a good run on the outer, Magical Mel outfinished Major Mark (parked) for the runnerup’s cheque.

Falcon Crown ran on late along the inner for fourth, ahead of Jellignite, who was given his chance three back on the outer, but peaked on his run over the last 100m, finishing fifth.

Major owner Katie Carville enjoyed dual success on Sunday with Ohoka Colorado (3c Christian Cullen-Millwood Krystal) winning his third race in his last four starts when taking out the last on the grass at the Morrinsville meeting.

Mark Jones also scored an upset win with Art Major mare Rockabella on Sunday at Marlborough, the Marlborough double advancing his training total to 28 wins for the season for $197,694 in stakes.

Rockabella, raced by Queensland’s Greg Brodie, kept up a strong run to hold by a neck in a 1:59.4 mile rate for the 2300m, the leaders running their last 800m in 58.9s.

WESTERN FLARE LEAVES FOR SYDNEY

Western Flare has been sold out of the Mark Jones stable and is to become a stablemate again of Lethal Rocket in the Pheasants Nest (NSW) stable of Darren Hancock.

The five-year-old McArdle gelding left Overport Lodge the winner of three of his last four starts when placed to win at Manawatu and in Canterbury amateur driver races.

He credited Trevor Ward with his first tote driving win at Rangiora on December 7, with the combination repeating at Addington in Western Flare’s NZ swan-song at Addington on December 20.

Racing over mobile sprint distances at Menangle should suit the good front-runner.

Western Flare won 10 of 41 start in New Zealand for $41,868. He won his first three for Woodend trainers David and Catherine Butt, then added another seven wins after joining the Mark Jones stable late last year.

“I think he’s been sold to the same connections as Lethal Rocket,” Mark said.

“He did a good job for the Met Five Syndicate but it was going to be hard to place him in Canterbury after winning his way through to a tough grade,” he said.
