OVERPORT LODGE SECURES THREE COLTS FROM 2ND DAY SALES

Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones secured three colts from the second day of the NZ Premier Yearling Sales in Christchurch on Wednesday, February 24.

He went to $30,000 for Si Si Senor, a Courage Under Fire colt from a Falcon Seelster mare for $30,000.

The colt, from the Jubilee Park, Cambridge, draft is from the same family as smart Canterbury winner and last season’s NZ Derby placegetter, Brilliant Strike (p3, 1:57.1 mile rate, 1950m).

Earlier, he secured Roll Along Styx, a Rocknroll Hanover colt from seven-win Fake Left mare Walk This Way (1:58.4 mile rate, 1700m) for $22,000.

Roll Along Styx, offered by Styx Stables of Christchurch, is a half-brother to three-win mare Dixey Styx (1:56.4, Aust), who ran third in a NZ Sires Stakes 2YO Fillies Final.

He’s from the same family as Time’s On My Side (1:58.9), 10 wins, placed in two NZ Standardbred Breeders Stakes), Carl Lewis (1:52, US, five NZ wins, 12 in the USA), Wonderful Tonight (1:59.1, six wins), Child In Time (1:58.1, 10 wins), Paradise City (p3, 1:56, six wins including a Caduceus Club Classic at two), Bon Jovi (1:56) and After Midnight (four wins, 1:59.4 mile rate, 2400m)

Mark also took home Shadow Chevron, a Shadow Play half-brother to former NZ Sapling Stakes winner Monaghan (1:56.5, 13 wins) for $16,000.

Shadow Chevron, offered by Small Car World Ltd, is from the eight-win Holmes Hanover mare Welcome Star (p3, 1:58), a half-sister to big Perth winner Rocket Star (1:56.2 mile rate, 2692m, 20 wins) and five sub 2:00 winners including Strata Star (1:53.3 Aust), who won five in NZ for Regan Todd and a further three in Australia.

He’s from the same family as former NZ Cup runnerup Anvil’s Star (1:54.8, 15 wins & $444,705), Billie’s A Star (1:55.7 mile rate, 2130m, 10 wins) and former big-winning Kiwi pacer Starship (TT, 1:54.5, 16 wins & $341,975).

BARRY (PURDON) TAKES A TURN IN THE SPOTLIGHT

A different Purdon, big brother Barry, stoke the show back from his brother Mark at Menangle on Saturday February 20 in the $A50,000 Robin Dundee Classic as his promising mare Start Dreaming surged into the field for next week’s $200,000 Ladyship Mile.

Mark Purdon had won earlier features in the night with the likes of (Our) Waikiki Beach and Smolda but the Robin Dundee was always going to be even more hotly contested with the first four assured of invitations into next Sunday’s Ladyship Mile.

And as they crossed the line it was Start Dreaming, Berisari, Betabcool and (My) Willow that filled the top four slots to take those coveted Ladyship berths.

(My) Willow, it was later revealed, had already qualified from her fifth to Frith in the Sibelia the previous week, so the final spot went to Saturday night’s fifth placegetter Juliette Bromac from the David Aiken stable.

Still it was Start Dreaming that looked the goods and her reinsman Blake Fitzpatrick assured racegoers the NZ visitor would be very competitive against the likes of Frith, Nike Franco and Fight For Glory in next week’s Group One mares’ feature.

A well-backed favourite, Start Dreaming ($2.30) raced in second and third spot to the turn until Fitzpatrick set her alight turning for home and she wore down her rivals to score by 1.3m in a 1:51.9 mile rate (1609m).

“Both her wins here have been outstanding in this country since Barry brought her over here,” said Fitzpatrick.

“Barry didn’t give me any particular instructions as he knows the racing is quite different here in Australia.

“So we had no set plan and I’m not even sure if I’ll be driving her for Barry next weekend (in the ladyship).

“But it’s still a pleasure to drive for a champion trainer like him who knows how to find a good horse – and he always has.”

‘ANGEL’ GETS DRAW FROM HEAVEN

Even an Australian record run by Smolda minutes later failed to take anything away from a barrier draw that will make this year’s SEW Eurodrive Miracle Mile one of the most keenly-contested in the race’s history.

Former Kiwi mare Arms Of An Angel drew a gasp from the crowd and a cheer from connections when the four-year-old mare drew the coveted No 1 gate for next Sunday’s $A750,000 Group One.

That should almost guarantee this will be the fastest Miracle Mile in history as her driver Lauren Panella looks likely to lower the handlebars and make her rivals chase her all the way.

Two-time Inter Dominion champion Beautide would have given his trainer-driver James Rattray a thrill too when he drew gate four, but will come into start from gate three if and when second emergency Easy On The Eye (gate three) is withdrawn.

Current Inter Dominion champion Lennytheshark drew gate six but could come as close as gate four when the emergencies are taken out while New Zealand’s 4Y0 star Have Faith In Me won’t be harmed by drawing gate seven, as he will probably be saved for a final crack at them in the straight the final time.

Of course Smolda failed to earn an invitation after missing last week’s sprints but the Mark Purdon star still impressed with a gutsy win a few minutes after the draw, rating an Australian record over 2300m (mobile) of 1:53.7 to beat Mach Beauty and Lochinver in the $A31,800 Brian Hancock FFA.

While Rasmussen drove the winner, she must have had mixed feelings as Smolda took one-tenth of a second off the previous record set by her mighty champions Blacks A Fake.

ZEE DANA THROWS DOWN NSW DERBY GAUNTLET

Manly rugby league hero Brett Stewart has never shirked making a tackle . . . and now the pacer he part-owns, Zee Dana is set to do the same.

The youngster threw the gauntlet down to New Zealand’s unbeaten superstar Our Waikiki Beach when he set a world-record time for 3YO colts and geldings on the way to smashing his rivals in the first heat of the New South Wales Derby at Tabcorp Park Menangle on Saturday, February 20.

Zee Dana stopped the clock at 2:51 for the mobile 2400m.

A masterly drive by Victoria Nathan Jack saw Zee Dana stop the clock in a stunning 1:54.7 for his final mile, breaking Major Secret’s previous world record for three-year-olds over 2400m by a full second.

Jack quickly showed his intentions when he was smartly away from gate five before taking a trail on Don’t Hold Back in the opening Derby qualifier.

But turning for home a split came when Power Of Red began to drop off after racing outside the leader and Zee Dana shot clear before romping away to score by almost 14 metres from Code Black (Todd McCarthy) with El Major (Mat Rue) a late-closing and impressive third.

Jack barely had time to wipe the mud from his visor on a night hit by intermittent showers before he was back in the winners’ circle in the second Derby heat, leading all-the-way with Brallos Pass to score by 2.9m from Sams The Master with another Victorian visitor Soho Tribeca (Chris Alford) flashing through to nab third.

Brallos Pass already has the SA Derby to his credit before a creditable fifth to Lazarus in the Victoria Derby.

With the right draw he is now certain to make his presence felt in next Sunday’s $A200,000 Coca-Cola Amatil NSW Derby.

The third and final Derby heat was just what the fans expected with the unbeaten Our Waikiki Beach (Natalie Rasmussen) doing just enough to make it 15 successive wins and maintain his unbeaten record.

Rasmussen made her move from last with 1000m to travel and settled outside the leader Shadow Runner before putting paid to his rivals in the straight to score in a 1:57.1 mile rate.

The make-up for next week’s 12-horse NSW Derby, with the barrier draw to be done on Sunday morning is:

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR UPCOMING SALES WELCOMED

Group One-winning Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones has identified yearlings for purchase at the upcoming NZ Yearling Sales and is seeking expressions of interest for owners to join the stable.

“We’ll be buying at the sales so new owners are welcome,” Mark said.

The yearlings will be developed with the prospect of making a profit for his owners over the next 12-18 months.

Mark has a history of selling quality horses, such as smart filly/mare Rocker Band (1:53.5, seven wins from 19 starts for $66,472), who he sold unraced to good Queensland stable client Greg Brodie.

Last July, he on-sold Cruz Bromac, who has been a revelation in his Australian racing for Victorian trainer Dean Braun.

Selected by Mark at the NZ Yearling Sales for $12,000, Cruz Bromac was given time .

Despite leaving a cold Canterbury winter unraced, Cruz Bromac paced 1:51.6 (1609m) at just his third start at Menangle last August for the Braun stable.

The Falcon Seelster-Crown Defender gelding has now won six of 12 starts for $62,815.

The Braun stable was also the beneficiary after purchasing former Overport Lodge filly Itz Nosurprisesthere.

Itznosurprisesthere was on-sold to Australia to maximise her earning potential after being born in the same season as champion Adore Me, who after dominating the 3YO fillies races that term, went on to win the 2014 NZ Cup winner and paced a 1:47.7 mile at Menangle.

Itznosurprisesthere made her mark in Australia, winning the NSW Oaks, the Tasmanian Oaks and the Queensland Oaks. She won six of just 15 starts for $A216,900.

Close relative Itz Bettor To Win sold unraced out of the Mark Jones stable after showing 2YO promise.

He won the Group Three Alabar NZ Kindergarten Stakes at two first-up for the Allstars Stable in 1:54.3.

Itz Bettor To Win has won eight of 18 NZ starts for $128,548.

Another from the family, Itz Billy Hillis, was also sold unraced out of the Mark Jones stable and has won his first two 3YO starts in Victoria, taking a 1:56.7 mile rate mark over 1670m.

Former smart Kiwi pacer Ohoka Texas and quiet achiever San Fran Lady, have been a couple of many ex-Overport Lodge pacers to make their mark in the United States.

Ohoka Texas, winner of 12 races in NZ including a Group Two Pelorus Trust 4YO Classic and a Group Three Invercargill Cup for Mark Jones, has lowered his career best to 1:50.2 in America.

He’s won a further eight races and over $121,000 in the United States, with his career earnings closing in on $300,000.

San Fran Lady, bred by Frances and Max Bowden, won three of 16 NZ starts for Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones, before being sold to race Australia, and latterly North America.

She won 15 times in Australia, paced 1:53 there and won the Group Three $30,00 Sky Super Sprint Final at Newcastle, in November 2010.

Six years on, San Fran Lady is still winning.

She racked up her 30th career win from 102 starts with her latest win at Delaware, Ohio, on January 31, taking her earnings over the equivalent of $NZ233,000.

She has lowered her lifetime mile best to 1:52 in North America.

Her half-brothers, Union Buster and Princeton, also become good Australian winner after being sold to Australian interests from humble beginnings in Canterbury.

Last season, Champagne Dreams, the Art Major year older half-sister to outstanding 2 and 3YO colt Lazarus (p2, 1:52.9, 12 wins and two placings from 14 starts for over $600,000), was sold to Australian interests.

She won just once in NZ but was a raceplaced NZ 3YO filly over a mile in 1:55.9.

Champagne Dreams has taken a 1:56.5 record across the Tasman, winning her first two Queensland starts.

ROCKER BAND HAS TO SETTLE FOR THIRD IN $40,000 MARES RACE

Rocker Band was so well she over-raced and cost herself a win in the $40,000 Garrards Horse & Hound Premier Mares Championship at Addington on Friday, February 12.

However, the Mark Jones-trained favourite was far from disgraced with her third in a swift run after getting up on the nickel at despatch point.

Driver Samantha Ottley eased Rocker Band from her wide gate but had to let her get on the three wide train beginning the last lap.

Rocker Band crossed to the markers ahead of Lightning Mach at the 600m and was given every chance but was swamped by outsider Tangos Delight (two-three back inner) and Democrat Party (handy outside the pace over the last 1000m).

Tangos Delight, who continues to punch above her weight for Ohoka trainer-driver Gavin Smith, was tenacious saved until the closing stages, winning going away by three-quarters of a length in 2:20 for the 1950m, a 1:55.5 mile rate.

She was only 0.3 of a second outside Pemberton Shard’s NZ mares record for the distance.

Tangos Delight (6m Bettor’s Delight-Tuapeka Tango) was recording her sixth win from 38 starts, taking her earnings to $73,236.

The Mark Jones stable also settled for a minor slice of the prize in the $146,250 PGG Wrightson NZ Yearling Sales 3YO Fillies Final.

Real Torque, from the ace, was also given every chance by Sam Ottley, trailing subsequent winner Luisanabelle Midfrew, who handed to Northern visitor Killer Queen a lap out.

Luisanabelle Midfrew (American Ideal-Lulabelle Midfrew), trained at West Melton by Nigel McGrath, was too good with a sprint lane finish in the hands of Matthew Williamson.

She ran clear by two lengths over strong wide finishers, Amazon Lily and Artful, the latter cutting Real Torque out of third money by a head.

Luisanabelle Midfrew, a daughter of five-win Christian Cullen mare Lulabelle Midfrew, was recording her second win from 10 starts, taking her earnings to $126,645.

Real Torque’s stablemate Northern Velocity was unable to feature after settling back from a second row alley.

She was forced wide when trying to improve at the 600m and couldn’t close on the leaders, who rated 1:57.2 for the 1950m on the front-end.

Overport Lodge trot stablemates, Eyre I Come (two-three back outer) and Sunoflindenny (who led early, then trailed Pyramid Monarch from the 1850m) tried hard but had to settle for minor placings behind favourite Bordeaux in the $20,000 C3 & faster Master Cleaning Handicap Trot.

The Philip Iggo-trained Bordeaux (5g Love You-Sapient) moved up wide a lap out to be parked from the 900m and kept going strongly to win by 2 3/4 lengths in 3:18.3 for the stand start 2600m.

This was Bordeaux’s fifth win on end and his sixth from 10 race starts.
