Upset Methven winner keeps surprising

TUXEDO MAX TENACIOUS AT METHVEN

Tuxedo Max, who punched above his weight with an upset Methven win last Sunday, can’t find a new home.

“He’s racing great. I can’t sell him and we don’t want a lot for him,” said trainer Mark Jones.

Tuxedo Max finishes best from the trail to upset for Blair Orange at Methven on October 19. (Race Images photo).

A son of former Interdominion Grand Final, Hunter Cup and dual
Auckland Cup champ Elsu (1:53.6), Tuxedo Max found some of his sire’s stamina to win from the second row on the grass last  Sunday, October 19.

Back early, driver Blair Orange sent the 4YO to the front 1700m out ahead of Graduate Under Fire, then trailed favourite Return To Sender at the 700m.

The under-rated Tuxedo Max dived through, holding Graduate Under Fire (late clear) by a nose, with Return To Sender close-up half a head away.

“It was a peach of a drive from Blair,” said co-owner Darryl Jones,  who co-bred and races Tuxedo Max with his brother Dean.

Tuxedo Max won in 3:08.3 for the 2400m (stand), the leaders running their last 800m in 60.4s, but was let go by punters being a 26-to-one  hope after being out of sorts at his previous Timaru start when mixing his gait.

That run aside, his spring form his hard to fault.

He led from the four gate and won without being extended over 2000m (2:01 rate) at Rangiora on October 5, and earlier was given a good trip by Blair, but couldn’t quite get past Real Life Hero on the grass at Motukarara on September 28.

Tuxedo Max, now the winner of four from 18 starts, will try his luck at Addington on Friday night,  starting from the 10m line in a 2600m stand start C2-3 pace.

He’s won one from six starts at Addington, having beaten Speights Girl over 2000m from a stand there on May 2, 2014, in a useful 2:30.4 (2:00.9 mile rate).

Tuxedo Max is from a race-winning Village Jasper mare, Paris Hilton, herself a half-sister to smart US winners bred by Darryl and Dean Jones in Victor Vuitton (1:51.4, US) and One Night In Paris (three NZ wins, 1:56.6, US).

Paris Affaire, the Holmes Hanover grand-dam of Tuxedo Max, won six of 26 races trotting for breeder-owners, the Jones brothers and no relation to Mark.

Darryl Jones, a real estate agent for Plains Realty in Christchurch, and brother Dean, who specialises in information technology, grew up in Prebbleton, where their interest in harness racing evolved.

“Our father was a punter. From our place we could see Des and Ben Grice train their horses. We lived next door to Reg Morris, and Barrie and Yvonne Hamilton were family friends,” Darryl said.

“We also went to school with Bruce Negus and Colin De Filippi so harness racing was all around us.”

Their first venture was Torrip Gold, who scored his first win when trained by Barry Hamilton (driven by son Neil) at Otaki in 1984, then notched another when prepared by Colin De Filippi, before being on-sold to race in North America.

Others winners for them include: Shy Mark (three), Crombianco (three), One Night In Paris (three), Cape N Cutter (one), Eltsunami (one), Adhika (one) and Venus Devine (one).

“The best one we’ve bred is Victor Vuitton. We sold him unqualified to North America where he’s won 36 and $430,000. We only wonder what he would have done here if we’d held on to him,” Darryl said.

Tuxedo Max’s dam Paris Hilton descends from a family nurtured by the late Des Grice.

Paris Hilton’s fifth dam Francheska (Nardins Byrd-Hindu Star, by Brahman-Petro Star), was a half-sister to tough pacer Canis Minor (11 NZ wins, 1:57.4, US) and to 1994-95 NZ Broodmare of the Year,  Sakuntala, dam of 13 winners including six-win mare Abbe Princess, Brad Adios (29 wins),  The Orator (1:56.7) and former top Victorian mare Tuapeka Star (22 wins, 1:59).

Tuapeka Star became famous as the dam of New Zealand Cup and Miracle Mile winner Iraklis (1:54.2), former top 2YO Ermis, and Blue And Royal (1:51.6, US); and has bred on as the grand-dam through different daughters of another champ in dual NZ Cup and Miracle Mile winner Monkey King (1:50.8) and 1997 NZ 3YO Pacer of the Year, Lavros Star (1:51.6, US).

“We’re sellers, so if Tuxedo Max is sold, we have a 3YO half-sister to him by Santanna Blue Chip to carry on with, and a Christian Cullen yearling from Paris Hilton,” Darryl said.

Paris Hilton is likely to be bred with $US2.4 million winner A Rocknroll Dance (1:47.4) this spring.

Twice The Delight delivers on debut

TWICE THE DELIGHT REWARDS SOUTHERN OWNERS

Aptly-named Twice The Delight passed her first step toward a potential Southland Oaks target in the autumn with a tidy front-running debut win at Gore on Saturday, October 11.

The daughter of Bettor’s Delight and Trelise (Holmes Hanover-Twice As Good) was sent out a dominating $1.60 favourite on the strength of an impressive recent Rangiora trial and was always in control.

Twice The Delight, from a big-winning family and a debut winner at Gore on Saturday.

Twice The Delight, from a big-winning family and a debut winner at Gore on Saturday.

Overport Lodge trainer-driver Mark Jones, who brought up his sixth training win for the term, dictated the front end from the three gate.

After having former stablemate Rockahula Arden for company over the last lap, was too good in the run home, winning by 1 1/4 lengths in a 2:00.4 rate (1700m).

Mark was entrusted with Twice The Delight after she failed to attract a bid at the 2013 NZ Premier Yearling Sale.

A cut to a leg a week from the sales distracted potential buyers.

Southland breeders, Wyndham-based Bruce and Caroline Robertson, and Bathan and Jane Muir, of Edendale, decided to leave her with Mark and restructured her ownership.

The Robertsons’ and the Muirs’, along with Bathan’s parents Ken and Jill, combined under the Matai Farms Limited banner.

Other shares were taken by Bill and Pauline Bain, of Roxburgh; and Peter and Caroline Clulee, of Mosgiel.

Twice The Delight, who continues to strengthen, has plenty going for her on breeding.

She is a sister to three-win squaregaiter Bet Online, but hails from a big “black type” winning pacing family.

Their four-win dam Trelise (1:58.7, 1700m) is a daughter of five-win Butler BG mare Twice As Good (1:56.5 m.r., 1700m).

Trelise is a half-sister to the smart pacers, St Barts (1:57 m.r., 1950m, 15 wins & over $150,000), Waitfornoone (1:55.7 m.r., 1700m, 11 wins & $201,805), Fight Fire With Fire (1:56.7, seven wins & $151,656), Twice As Hot (1:59.6 m.r, 2200m, five wins & $50,537) and Mark Dennis (1:54.2, 25 wins & $A177,567).

Two close relatives starred across the Tasman last weekend.

Mark Dennis won first-up since transferring to the New South Wales team of Shane Tritton in the $A30,000 Group Three ffa at Menangle, NSW, on Saturday night, in a 1:57.4 rate over 2300m.

Twice As Hot’s son Flaming Flutter (1:53.9, 15 wins & $A190,446) shone at Tabcorp Park, Melton, Victoria, on Friday night.

The son of Bettor’s Delight and Twice As Hot was just outside Carribean Blaster’s Melton 2240m stand start track mark when taking out the Group Two $A50,505 City Of Melton Plate in a fast 1:57.6 rate.

Twice The Delight’s third dam Princess Nandina (1:59.8) left top USA filly/mare Pacific (p2, 1:56.8 & p3, 1:53), the winner of 27 race for $871,550 including a Breeders Crown 3YO Fillies and Mistletoe Shalee Stakes Final.

RUMERATION FOR LAST-PLACED GUGGENHEIM

The connections of Gore maiden runnerup Rockahula Arden were ordered to pay  remuneration equivalent to the third-placed stake of $475 to the connections of last-placed Guggenheim under the discretion of new judicial rules.

In a first-case scenario, it was established that Rockahula Arden (Dexter Dunn) had shifted out sharply when the removeable deafeners were released, despite the driver’s efforts to keep his horse straight, checking Guggenheim (Nathan Williamson, three wide).

Trailing horses, Canasta and Neat N Petite, were also inconvenienced.

The connections of Guggenheim sought a JCA ruling, which empowered the Judicial committee to order part, or all, of the stake monies payable if they were satisfied the interference denied the affected runner a chance to finish in a higher place.

ABETTORPUNT IMPROVES NZ CUP RANKING

Victorian pacer Abettorpunt has moved three spots to seventh on the latest rankings for the $700,000 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington on November 11.

The 7YO David Lewis-trained Bettor’s Delight gelding improved his ranking after taking out a Group 3 ffa at Ballarat last Friday for driver John Caldow in a track record-equalling 1:53.1 mile.

Abettorpunt, a former runnerup to the ill-fated Sushi Sushi in the 2011  Australasian Breeders Crown 3YO colts and geldings Final,  is now the winner of 23 of 59 starts for $413,117.

He finished fourth from a stand start in Christen Me’s Hunter Cup at Tabcorp Park, Melton, in February. In his only other stand start race, he ran third in the Nyah Cup last October.

Maximan, the runnerup to Abettorpunt at Ballarat, moves up two spots on the cup rankings to 20th. Formerly, he won five on end last season for Templeton trainer Jimmy Curtin, including the Westport,Reefton and Manawatu Cups, before being sold to clients of Andy Gath’s Victorian stable,

The big surprise was Monday’s withdrawal of previously 13th-ranked Bit Of A Legend.

SMOKE N GRIN TRANSFERS ON WINNING NOTE

Smoke N Grin, who opened a winning weekend treble for Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones at Forbury Park last Thursday, October 2, will remain south for his future racing.

The Grinfromeartoear-Smoke N Mirrors gelding transferred back to Westwood Beach trainers Jonny Cox and Amber Hoffman after leading throughout the Dunedin Holiday Park Pace.

Blair Orange, notched a winning treble of drives with the Overport Lodge team last weekend.

Blair Orange, notched a winning treble of drives with the Overport Lodge team last weekend.

He will attempt to further his record for the Cox/Hoffman barn, but steps up to a C2-4 win race, at Gore on Saturday.

Smoke N Grin won second-up for the Westwood Beach trainers at the Riverton meeting at Invercargill last November.

He was having his fourth start this spring for the Jones team at Forbury, with Mark making the decision pre-race he would have more suitable opportunities on the south circuit.

Smoke N Grin stepped straight to the front for Blair Orange and maintained a solid clip to hold the consistent Milligan by 1 1/4 lengths in 3:30.2 for the 2700m stand (2:05.2 mile rate).

He quickened over his last 800m in 57.8s and final 400m in 28.7s.

Oasis Dream was rewarded for consistency at Forbury.

Having his fourth run since being purchased by the Butterworth Racing Syndicate, the half-brother to Le Sol (1:54.3) and grand-son of five win racemare Laudit held Courage To Fly by half a length.

The 4YO Major In Art gelding paced the 2200m (stand) in 2:53.1 in the hands of Blair, pacing his last 800m in 548.6s and final 400m in 28s.

Mark racked up his fifth win for the term when Tuxedo Max made amends for his close second at Motukarara with a useful front-running win at Rangiora on Sunday October 7.

The 4YO Elsu-Paris Hilton gelding strode to the top for Blair and made every post a winning one.

He was untroubled to hold trailer Jaycees Belle by 1 3/4 lengths, pacing the mobile 2000m in 2:30.5, quickening over his last 80m in 58.4s and final 400m in 27.5s.
