Fortuitious clean sweep of Crown heats

J Scott Latest News

STABLEMATES TAKE OUT ADDINGTON ABC HEATS

Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones says Sabellian may be attractive to Australian buyers after qualifying for the Australasian Breeders Crown 3YO fillies semi-finals at Melton in August.

He has no plans to take Sabellian, or other Friday’s promoted 3YO ABC colts and geldings winner Zakspatrol, to Victoria himself.

Sabellian, who sprinted her last 400m in 27.2s in the slushy conditions to win the Australasian Breeders Crown 3YO Fillies Heat at Addington on July 18.

Sabellian, who sprinted her last 400m in 27.2s in the slushy conditions to win the Australasian Breeders Crown 3YO Fillies Heat at Addington on July 18.

However, he made the most of a good opportunity to pick up the $3500 individual winning stakes for his owners with the paid-up Breeders Crown runners.

Previously with the Allstars barn, Sabellian won the $16,000 Alabar Sires Stakes Fillies Championship Silver at Auckland on December 31, then was put aside after one unplaced run in January.

After winning three from 11, the Art Major filly was transferred to Mark’s Burnham stable for her winter resumption and took some improvement out of her first-up run behind Someardenwomewhere and Explosive Art in C2-4 pace at Timaru on July 6.

“She’s on the market and has no problems whatsoever. She’s very speedy and well-bred,” Mark said of the filly, currently co-raced by Kahukuri and Studholme Bloodstock.

Sabellian is from a lightly-raced daughter of Christian Cullen and four-win former NZ Leonard Memorial winner Assisi (Vance Hanover-Romano).

She was untroubled to lead and sprint clear by three lengths for catch driver Ricky May over only other rival Moonlite Dance in Friday’s $5000 ABC Heat.

Sabellian rated a leisurely 2:05.7 for the mobile 1950m in the bitter and wet conditions, picking up the pace over her last 800m in 57.8s and final 400m in 27.2s.

She has a chance for further spoils this weekend against stablemate Goodness Gracious Me and others in the C2-4 Tom Gundry Freight Fillies & Mares Winter Cup (1609m) at Ashburton on Sunday.

Zakspatrol, a promoted winner of the Australasian Breeders Crown 3YO colts & geldings Heat at Addington on July 18.

Mark made it a fortuitous clean sweep in both ABC heats after Zakspatrol was a promoted winner over neck victor Artismee, who tangled late, in the 3YO colts and geldings heat.

Zakspatrol, also reined by Ricky, set a more genuine clip in the conditions in the boys heat, but the Robert Dunn Artismee did slightly better coming off a trail before mixing his gait late.

They rated 1:59.2 in the colts and geldings heat, the leaders running their last 800m in 58.6s and final 400m in 28.7s.

Zakspatrol had won his previous Addington start on Friday, July 11, in the hands of Blair Orange.

The 3YO Art Major gelding, co-raced by Grant and Katherine Hatton, made the most of a good trip three back on the outer in the C1-2 Chesters Plumbing & Bathrooms Handicap Pace at his previous tote start.

They fought to hold Special Bella by half a head in 3:23.1 for the stand start 2600m, the last 800m in 59.4s.

Zakspatrol has now raced 16 times for three wins and four placings, earning $16,189.

STRIKE ON COMMAND DELIVERS FOR 300th

Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones brought up his 300th training win when Strike On Command responded to a clever drive from good mate Blair Orange at Marlborough on Sunday, June 22.

Strike On Command and driver Blair Orange. They delivered the 300th training win for trainer Mark Jones at Blenheim on Sunday.

Strike On Command and driver Blair Orange. They delivered the 300th training win for trainer Mark Jones at Blenheim on Sunday.

The milestone caps Mark’s sixth and most successful season as a professional trainer.

This was his 68th win for the season, taking the stable earnings to $738,993, with mutliple Group One winning trotter Master Lavros the big breadwinner.

“Its been a good season. We’ll be a bit down next season as a lot have been sold and we’re a bit light on numbers,” Mark said.

Strike On Command, nutted out of first by Motu Prince Of Peru in the dying stages on the first day, was able to be saved a shade longer for his final sprint on the second day in the C2-3 A1 Drycleaning and Laundry Mobile Pace.

Pacemaking favourite Al’s Courage had dashed clear inside the final 200m and looked to have the result in safe keeping but Blair had other ideas after giving his charge a good run on the outer.

He lifted Strike On Command over the final 100m to win going away by half a length in a useful 2:00.1 mile rate for the mobile 2300m, the leaders last 800m in 57.5s.

Strike On Command, a consistent 3YO McArdle colt, has now raced 22 times for five wins and eight placings (including six seconds) for $31,382 in stakes.

Raced by Australian owner Kevin Stanley, Strike On Command is the second foal from Noble Strike (1:56.8h, US), who numbered a PGG NZ Yearling Sales 2YO Fillies South Island Graduette win and a Nevele R Fillies Heat among her two NZ wins for Ian and Malcolm Shinn.

Her first foal, Cotton Row (by Bettor’s Delight) was also a multiple winner for Kevin Stanley, winning three races in NSW. She time-trialled in 1:57.8 at Menangle before retiring last year and is currently in foal to Mach Three.

Noble Strike, an OK Bye-TK Swift mare, proved a consistent winner in North America, notching another 15 wins, earning the equivalent of $149,602.

She is a half-sister to other big USA winners in Time Flies (1:52, US; 36 wins incl. 32 in the US for $624,230 career winnings), Ultimate Pursuit (1:51.6, US, 44 wins incl. 38 in the US), and this season’s NZ winners, 3YO filly Ultimate CC (three wins including a Nevele R Fillies Consolation, 2:00.3 m.r., 1950m, Sires Silver) and 2YO colt winner Pomme Roy.

Time Flies is the dam of former Overport Lodge 2YO winner Glenferrie Magic (1:59.1, 1700m), who showed much potential winning once from three starts before having her race career cut short.

Strike On Command is bred to be above average.

He belongs to the same family as other big winners _ Slybye (1:52.4, US, 31 wins in NZ, Aust & US), El Cabalero (1:54.4, US, 17 wins incl. 12 in the US), Algranco Alive (1:56.2 mile rate, 1650m, 10 Aust. wins) and Flak Jacket (1:54, US, a former NZ Kindergarten Stakes winner at two, 12 wins in NZ, Aust. and US).
