KOWHAI WHIZ BRINGS UP 10TH SEASONAL WIN FOR STABLE

Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones has hit double training figure wins for the new term after Kowhai Whiz took out the C2-6 Fergus Matheson Memorial Trot at Forbury on Thursday, October 20.

Mark moved to 10 wins from 51 starters for the term and outright fourth on this season’s trainers premiership.

Stable driver Sam Ottley is now fifth on the drivers premiership, after moving to 11 wins for the season, with a near perfect steer behind Kowhai Whiz.

Even though they were off 40m, Sam found a sweet one out trail behind the improving Feather Boyz beginning the last 1200m.

They had the out out and one back trail at the 800m and the 8YO Now Another Look gelding was too sharp in the run home.

Kowhai Whiz unleashed wide turning for home and were too good for Dusky Eyre (out from the trail on the turn) and Soney Beatt (three back) in 3:32.2 for the stand start 2700m.

Raced by breeders John and Jill Hartnell, Kowhai Whiz was racking up his ninth win from 62 starts, taking his earnings past the $62,000 mark.

Kowhai Whiz, now on a C7 assessment, is the best of five individual NZ winners for his five-win Gee Whiz II dam Surprising.

Third dam Susquehanna numbered a 3YO Addington win among her two trot wins from 17 starts in 1974 for Noel Berkett.

Susquehanna, at stud, left good filly Cheasapeake (six wins from 21 starts), who beat the boys in the 1982 NZ Trotting Derby at Addington, and Hero’s Welcome (four wins).

Graceland (by Some Evander-Chesapeake), the grand-dam of Kowhai Whiz, Kowhai Monarch (five wins), Kowhai Sunrise (three) McCready (three, one in Aus) and The Drunken Drummer (nine wins, including five in Australia & $81,943), won once.
