DELIGHTFUL MEMPHIS TO FRESHEN AFTER EASY SIRES HEAT WIN

Delightful Memphis will have the luxury of seven-10 days off to freshen after winning the opening $22,000 Alabar Sires Stakes 3YO Fillies Heat in a jog at Addington on Friday, October 21.

The smart daughter of champion sire Bettor’s Delight and Memphis Melody will be back for the third heat at Addington on November 25, then head to Auckland to fine tune for the final on December 31.

Warm favourite Delightful Memphis and Blair Orange have the opening Alabar Sires Stakes 3YO Fillies Heat comfortably won with less than 50m to run at Addington on Friday, October 20. (Race Images photo).

There is also another heat of the series at Alexandra Park on December 9.

Last season’s experience of racing well right-handed at Auckland will stand to her for the Sires Stakes Final.

She was the runnerup in three stakes races in four Auckland starts behind Spanish Armada last autumn, and wound up her two-year-old season with a second to Partyon in the $150,000 Harness Jewels 2YO Diamond at Cambridge on June 4.

Trainer Mark Jones had Delightful Memphis on song for the opening Alabar Sires Heat despite a week ago blowing out near the end of her Rangiora workout.

She was untroubled to lead throughout from the ace draw for regular driver Blair Orange, who didn’t have to release the deafeners in the run to the line.

Delightful Memphis came clear of Major Rocket (parked) by 2 1/2 lengths in a solid 2:22.8 for the 1950m (1:57.8 mile rate), with Blair letting her quicken over the last 800m in 56s and final 400m in a slick 26.6s.

Major Rocket held out the Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen-trained stablemates, Smiley Sophie and Tachyon, for the minors.

Delightful Memphis was recording her second win, after earlier winning her 2YO debut in the Group Three $25,000 Sweet Lou Leonard Memorial at the Cheviot meeting on February 28.

She edged past the $100,000 mark with Friday’s win in her eighth career start for owners, Wayne Higgs, Simon Doull, Sir Loins Limted, Debra and Pete Smith, Kaysan Farming Ltd and BM & JH Holdings Ltd.

KOWHAI WHIZ BRINGS UP 10TH SEASONAL WIN FOR STABLE

Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones has hit double training figure wins for the new term after Kowhai Whiz took out the C2-6 Fergus Matheson Memorial Trot at Forbury on Thursday, October 20.

Mark moved to 10 wins from 51 starters for the term and outright fourth on this season’s trainers premiership.

Stable driver Sam Ottley is now fifth on the drivers premiership, after moving to 11 wins for the season, with a near perfect steer behind Kowhai Whiz.

Even though they were off 40m, Sam found a sweet one out trail behind the improving Feather Boyz beginning the last 1200m.

They had the out out and one back trail at the 800m and the 8YO Now Another Look gelding was too sharp in the run home.

Kowhai Whiz unleashed wide turning for home and were too good for Dusky Eyre (out from the trail on the turn) and Soney Beatt (three back) in 3:32.2 for the stand start 2700m.

Raced by breeders John and Jill Hartnell, Kowhai Whiz was racking up his ninth win from 62 starts, taking his earnings past the $62,000 mark.

Kowhai Whiz, now on a C7 assessment, is the best of five individual NZ winners for his five-win Gee Whiz II dam Surprising.

Third dam Susquehanna numbered a 3YO Addington win among her two trot wins from 17 starts in 1974 for Noel Berkett.

Susquehanna, at stud, left good filly Cheasapeake (six wins from 21 starts), who beat the boys in the 1982 NZ Trotting Derby at Addington, and Hero’s Welcome (four wins).

Graceland (by Some Evander-Chesapeake), the grand-dam of Kowhai Whiz, Kowhai Monarch (five wins), Kowhai Sunrise (three) McCready (three, one in Aus) and The Drunken Drummer (nine wins, including five in Australia & $81,943), won once.

Ariadne Lavra builds towards Southland Oaks

GORE WINNER ARIADNE LAVRA EARNS SOUTHLAND OAKS POINTS

Ariadne Lavra, untroubled to justify her warm favouritism with a 4 3/4 lengths maiden win at Gore on Sunday, October 16, has made a good early start to qualify for the $45,000 Southland Oaks on April 30.

Horses must start in at least two race in southern races to be eligible for the Oaks.

“We took her down there to earn money for Southland Oaks qualifying. All going well, we will head back for the Riverton meeting there in two weeks with her,” said Burnham trainer Mark Jones.

“After Riverton, we will look to line up though Cup week and may look at Auckland with her,” he said.

Ariadne Lavra was first-up at Gore since a penalty-free win as a 2YO, beating She’sa Tricky Bridge and Crackared in a Motukarara grass maiden in April.

She earlier confirmed her promise by running third, second-up, to stablemate Delightful Memphis, and the All Stars filly Renske B, in the Group 3 Caduceus Club Of Southland/Nevele R Stud Mobile 2YO Fillies Pace in March.

At Gore, she began safely over the 2200m trip for catch driver Brent Barclay, settling third, then worked to the front after the opening 300m.

She had an easy enough run in the middle stages, then was far too good over her last 800m in 57.7s and closing 400m in 27.8s, clocking 2:53.5 for the full trip.

“She is not eligible for any of the age group series, so if she continues to race good, we may look at a late payment for the Nevele R Series with her,” he said.

The daughter of Art Major looks set to further a top association Mr Kotikas has enjoyed with some of her illustrious relatives.

She’s the first foal from Hilarious Lavra, who won once at Marlborough from just six starts when prepared by Nigel McGrath.

Kypros Kotzikas, who racest top trotter Master Lavros, and promising 3YO pacing filly, Ariadne Lavra, from the Mark Jones stable.

Breeder-owner, Kypros Kotzikas, who races promising 3YO pacing filly, Ariadne Lavra, from the Mark Jones stable.

Hilarious Lavra (Grinfromeartoear-Tuapeka Kay, by Smooth Fella-Tuapeka Star) is from a family which owner Kypros Kotzikas has enjoyed much success.

Her grand-dam, Tuapeka Kay was an unraced sister to Marsa Star (1:59.5, four wins, for Tuapeka Lodge), and to Ermis (17 wins & $191,568), the first of two of Kypros and the late Mary Kotzikas’s big pacing winners.

She was also a half-sister to the Kotzikas’s top 1990s pacer Iraklis (1:54.2, 22 wins & $1,019,042), the 1996 NSW Miracle Mile and 1997 New Zealand Cup winner.

Marsa Star, at stud for Tuapeka Lodge, was the source of more winners for the Kotzikas famiily in Erotas (six NZ wins, 1:53.2, US), Lavros Eros (nine Australian wins, 1:58.7) and Lavros Harrier (seven NZ wins, 1:54.1, US).

Star Class, a Talk About Class half-sister to Iraklis, Ermis, Marsa Star and Tuapeka Kay, left another top winner for Mr and Mrs Kotzikas in Lavros Star, who won 11 from 18 NZ starts including the 1997 $121,250 PGG NZ Sales Series 3YO Pace and Great Northern Derby.

Lavros Star, also third behind Franco Enforce and Franco Hat Trick in the 1996 ANZ Bank NZ Sires Stakes Final at Addington, also won the 1997 Victoria Derby Final at Moonee Valley, and later that season was exported to North America.

He paced 1:50 in the United States and retired the winner of 28 races from 134 lifetime starts, earning the equivalent of around $NZ595,000.

Another big filly winner from the family is O Baby (Christian Cullen-Braeside Lady, by Artsplace-Braeside Star, by Soky’s Atom-Tuapeka Star).

O Baby (p3, 1:54.8, eight wins at two and three, for $391,273) was a former top age group filly for the Mark Purdon stable, winning the 2011 NZ Sires Stakes 2YO Fillies Final, along with the 2012 Harness Jewels 3YO Diamond, Nevele R Fillies Final and Queensland Oaks.

The Mark Jones stable advanced to nine seasonal wins on Sunday.

The Overport Lodge team also scored at Methven with Maninthemirror, who kept fighting on the front-end to claim a dead-heat victory in the Speights Maiden Pace with joint favourite, Beach Skipper.

“A dead-heat was the best result with him. He’ll head to Kaikoura,” Mark said.

Maninthemirror, a rangy 6YO gelding by Christian Cullen from Classy Celine, a four-win Holmes Hanover mare from OK Celine (five wins), saluted at his 13th race start.

He led early, trailed, then led again over the last 1600m for Sam Ottley.

Beach Skipper, from three back on the inner, made the finish interesting with the judge unable to separate the favourites at the line.

Maninthemirror was having only his second start for the Mark Jones stable, having finished third, first-up, at Forbury on October 6.

GOOD WEEKEND FOR EX-OVERPORT LODGE PACERS IN AUSTRALIA

Ex-Overport Lodge pacers, Champagne Dreams, Northern Velocity and I Get Around, furthered their Australian careers with wins at various venues last weekend.

Champagne Dreams, the 5YO older half-sister to NZ Cup favourite Lazarus (1:52.9, 16 wins from 19 starts for $924,914), is now a stablemate of top Grand Circuit pacers, Lennytheshark and Hectorjayjay in the David Aiken stable.

Champagne Dreams, the half-sister to Lazarus (p2, 1:52.9), shown formerly with Overport Lodge trainer, Mark Jones.

She settled three back on the markers from the inside of the second row at Melton last Saturday, October 8.

The Art Major-Bethany (Christian Cullen-Spirit Of Beth) mare finished best for Josh Aiken to win by a head in a 1:56.6 rate (2240m), the leaders running their last 800m in 57.4s and final 400m in 27.9s.

Fourth in the same race was another former Mark Jones-trained winner in Forty Thieves.

Champagne Dreams is unbeaten in three starts this season, while her career record is now 36 starts for nine wins and eight placings, for earnings of $50,457.

She has a fastest winning mile rate of 1:55.6.

Northern Velocity (4m Mach Three-Northern Franco), the younger half-sister to former NZ Free-For-All winner Pembrook Benny, has struck a purple patch of form in recent weeks in Victoria.

After initially leaving Overport Lodge and racing in New South Wales, she has stepped up winning in a career best 1:56.6 mile rate (1650m) in a $10,000 C1-2 mares pace at Bendigo on Friday, October 7.

She seteled three back on the outer from the six gate, moved up parked over the last lap and delivered by 1.4 metres as a $2.70 favourite.

Northern Velocity is unbeaten in her two Victorian starts.

She has either been first or second in nine Australian starts, winning six.

Her career earnings now stand at $174,574, the bulk of her earnings coming at two when she won the big 2015 PGG Wrightson NZ Yearling Sales 2YO Fillies Pace at Addington for the Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen stable.

She also won the Group Three Caduceus Club Of Southland 2YO Fillies Classic for the All Stars stable at two, and was exported in February out of the Mark Jones stable after battling in strong NZ age group company.

At Pinjarra, West Australia, on Monday, October 10, Now I Get Around (4m Bettor’s Delight-Runaround Rhonda) led throughout to win the C0-1 $7000 Skysportsradio.com.au Mares Pace.

Now I Get Around, raced in Australia by trainer Nathan Meade, and driven by Ashleigh Markham, was notching her first WA win in five starts.

She held by 1.4 metres from NZ-bred Fay Darling, a Bettor’s Delight mare from top mare Molly Darling, who moved up parked, in a 1:59 rate (2185), quickening over her last 800m in 56.5s and final 400m in 28.3s.

She was a maiden winner at Nelson last January for the Mark Jones stable in the hands of Sam Ottley, scoring in a useful 1:59.8 rate over the 2400m.
