Tests reveal general joint issues

MASTER LAVROS TO BE TREATED FOR ‘WEAR AND TEAR’

A skeletal scinitgraphy bone scan test has revealed some general joint issues could be affecting last season’s Trotter of the Year, Master Lavros.

Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones sent the giant Sundon gelding to Matamata to undergo the scinitraphy test after Master Lavros mixed his gait in his early racing this season.

Master Lavros, has another Glenferrie Farm Challenge target in March.

Master Lavros, has another Glenferrie Farm Challenge target in March.

The test, which results in the production of two-dimensional images after the internal administration of a radiopharmaceutical dye imaging agent, found signs of general wear and tear in his front joints and stifles.

“The report said to just carry on with him,” Mark said.

“So we will treat him with irap, then swim him for a few weeks and carry on as it’s a thing that has to be managed and a long spell won’t fix.”

“I would love to get back to the Glenferrie Challenge with him,” he said.

The Glenferrie Farm Challenge is a $A200,000 Group One trot staged at Tabcorp Park, Menangle, New South Wales, on March 1.

Mark was hugely disappointed Master Lavros broke stride at the start of this year’s Glenferrie Challenge over 1609m, after trialling boldly in the lead-up.

Master Lavros returned to New Zealand, regaining his best in the NZ Trotting Championship and Cannam Rowe Cup, before being spelled.

Mark is keen to show Australia trot fans what Master Lavros can do when he’s in form.

Master Lavros, only six, has raced 36 times for 15 wins, earning $358,646 in stakes for owner Kypros Kotzikas.

Astrapi trots and delivers Timaru win

ASTRAPI DELIVERS AT TIMARU FOR TRAINER

Astrapi isn’t the type you’d want to play cards with but he behaved himself for boss Mark Jones at the Timaru meeting on Saturday, November 22.

Mark stepped him safely from the inside of the back row to be soon trailing three back, but his chances didn’t look good after being held up by the tiring Final Secret at the 400m.

Astrapi, back in winning form on Saturday for trainer Mark Jones in the colours of owner Kypros Kotzikas.

The former world champion driver manouevred him off the markers and gradually let the enigmatic squaregaiter gather top speed in the run home .

Mark didn’t risk releasing Astrapi’s removeable deafeners.

Astrapi, the younger brother to 2006 Moonee Valley Interdominion Trot champion Delft (1:53, US), charged through gaps to win going away by three-quarters of a length from Heza Mighty Monarch, resuming for Nigel McGrath.

The winner had loomed as a distinct danger at Ashburton during NZ Cup week before mixing his gait in side the final 200m.

Mark was confident Astrapi wasn’t far away from a win, providing he held his gait throughout.

Astrapi was notching his first win since scoring at Forbury in December last year for driver Ricky May.

The 5YO Sundon-Miriam gelding was recording his third win from only 23 starts for Lavros Lodge owner Kypros Kotzikas.

Mr Kotzikas has also bred other good winners in Lavra Miriam (four NZ wins, 1:57.4), Top Notch Lavros (five NZ wins) and minor winner Lavros The Great from Miriam, a Chiola Hanover mare from Carol Seth, who won three.

Meanwhile, results from tests to Mr Kotzikas’ top trotter Master Lavros should be known by the end of next week.

Hellavahanover, withdrawn from the Timaru meeting on Saturday, is leaving the Mark Jones stable to do her future racing in New South Wales.

The 4YO Brylin Boyz mare is being sent to Sydney trainer Joe Rando after being pulled up for the second consecutive time with suspect stand start manners at Addington on Show day.

The Rando stable has had success with close relative Romper’s Monarchy (5m Monarchy-Amandas Gem), who has won four from 20 starts and scored back-to-back Tabcorp Park, Menangle, wins last month.

Hellavahanover did step off the unruly off 20m and proved too good in a C0-1 trot at the Tuapeka meeting at Forbury on October 26 for driver Blair Orange.

She was also a maiden winner at Auckland over 2200m from a stand in March, first-up in her north stint for Gareth Dixon.

Hellavahanover, from a half-sister to Romper Stomper (2:00.1 mile rate 2600m, 12 wins & $180,579) and two-race winner Amanda’s Flash, won two of 15 NZ starts.

MASTER LAVROS GOING NORTH FOR EXPLORATORY TEST

Top squaregaiter Master Lavros will be sent to Matamata for further extensive tests after mixing his gait in the Dominion Handicap at Addington on Friday.

Master Lavros, Matamata-bound for a dye test.

Last year’s Dominion winner and the reigning Trotter of the Year hasn’t been 100 percent this spring.

Despite the efforts of trainer Mark Jones to turn him round for Show day, the huge Sundon gelding gave further evidence of a hidden issue troubling him.

“We’ll send him to Matamata and get them to run the dye through him,” Mark said.

“We’re getting nothing the way we’re going so we’ll find out exactly what it is and let mother nature take its course ,” he said.

The Overport trainer is prepared to give Master Lavros as much time as he needs to regain full health.

Master Lavros, only six and young for a trotter, is the veteran of only 36 starts for 15 wins and earnings of $358,646.

He stepped well from the inside of the back row on Friday, settling third, but broke when moving up in the open with 2450m left.

He was out of contention thereafter, finishing 11th to runaway winner Jaccka Justy, for Westwood Beach (south Dunedin) co-trainer and driver Jonny Cox.

The winner backed up was  backing up from a fast late finish for fifth in Tuesday’s NZ Trotting Free-For-All.

Settling five back on the outer after beginning off the unruly, Jaccka Justy improved with three-wide cover behind Doctor Hook from the 700m to the turn and unleashed an undeniable run turning for home.

Jonny Cox, who trains with partner Amber Hoffman, couldn’t hide his delight, saluting as he crossed the line, the winner clocking a strong 4:05.2 for the 3200m.

The successful strike-rate trainer emulated a great family tradition with squaregaiters.

Jonny was just nine when former family hero David Moss won the first of his two back-to-back Dominion Handicaps at Addington in 1993.

Jonny’s father John Cox prepared the giant-sized Gekoj gelding David Moss at Winton for the first 15 of 31 wins.

David Moss went on to win just over $490,000 in stakes.

Due to southern commitments, John Cox sent David Moss to Canterbury trainer Robert Cameron for both Dominion wins, and for feature north racing to former Papakura trainer Clive Herbert.

Jonny’s late grand-father, Harry Cox, a successful Winton trainer, prepared and drove Poupette for an upset win in the 1965 Interdominion Trotting Grand Final at Forbury Park.

This was Jonny and Amber’s first Group One training success in the $255,000 feature, securing the $137,500 winning bankroll for owner, Charlie and Ailsa Small.

Last season, they gained a Group Three win with the same horse in the Banks Peninsula Trotting Cup.

Jaccka Justy has now raced 49 times for 13 wins and five placings for $224,718 in stakes.

The Westwood Beach trainers and Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones have built up a good rapport during their training careers.

They have been able to utilise each others facilities when their respective horses travel around the South Island for racing opportunities.

EYRE I COME SOLID FOURTH

Impressive NZ Cup day winner Eyre I Come backed up with a close-up fourth for the Mark Jones stable in the C2+ $20,400 Peek Exhibition – Alf Hughes Memorial Handicap Trot on Show day.

After settling back off the 10m line, driver Blair Orange took an inside run round the home turn and he finished well, just half a length from winner Indiana Jones.

The Steve McRae-trained and Craig Thornley-driven Indiana Jones produced a good effort off the unruly off the 10m line, holding out Clover Mac, Jayceekay and Eyre I Come, in a smart 3:18.3 (2600m).

“Not making excuses, but the run the other day might have taken a wee edge off him,” Mark said of Eyre I Come.

“I thought he had his chance, but in 12 months time, he’ll be a lot better horse,” he said.

EYRE I COME LIKELY TO BACK UP FRIDAY

Promising squaregaiter Eyre I Come is likely to try for a Cup week double on Show day.

Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones says he plans to race him again on Friday providing the 4YO Majestic Son gelding eats up over the next two days.

Eyre I Come got favourite punters away to a flyer in the opener on NZ Cup day, Tuesday, November 11.

The $2.80 favourite stepped slowly but safely in the C2 and faster $20,400 Garrards Horse & Hound Handicap Trot over 3200m.

Eyre I Come, a close relative of recent top Victorian-trained squargaiters Sundon’s Gift and Let Me Thru, was sent to the front at the mid-way point.

He ran out the extreme trip strongly for driver Blair Orange, striding clear by three lengths over Queen Kenny, who tracked him over the final 1600m.

The winner trotted the journey in a useful 4:07.8, keeping the pace strong over his last 800m in 59.2s and final 400m in 30s, suggesting he could be a future Dominion Handicap contender.

“I was rapt with his effort,” Mark said.

“The Harness Jewels (Ashburton, May 30) is the long-term aim with him.”

“I’m thinking of going to Geraldine with him (November 29) then spelling him.”

Mark says the $25,000 Four & Five-Year-Old Trotting Championship at Addington on March 20 will be his first aim after a let-up.

Eyre I Come, raced by Grant Hatton of Christchurch, with Merv and Meg Butterworth, of Melbourne, is now unbeaten in both 4YO starts.

From just nine starts, he’s now the winner of three for $27,004.

Eyre I Come is bred to develop further being a grandson of former top NZ trot mare Landora’s Pride, who numbered 34 wins including the 1988 Dominion Handicap and 1987 Rowe Cup.
