Inter Dominion news: Sir Lincoln and Chariot King have until Friday to prove their fitness for the final on Sunday. Sir Lincoln had a foot abscess burst out on Monday and Chariot King was off colour following his trial at Menangle on Tuesday. Both horses will be vet checked tomorrow with calls being made then.

Fixed Odds out on NZ TAB: the NZ TAB has Fixed Odds out on all races at Menangle on Sunday. Kiwi horses are favoured to win five of the seven Group 1 races on offer. Those favourites are Rozelski ($2.50), Bettor Cover Lover ($2.80), Christen Me ($1.80), Terror To Love ($2.70) and Stig ($2.70). A pretty nice quintet!

Christen Me poised to win Chariots: He’s been the subject of a plunge since his win over I’m Themightyquinn at the trials on Tuesday. His run was every bit as good as the WA champ’s and he’s only racing his own age on Sunday. A quote from Anthony Butt, stand in driver in the trial reveals all, “he was never out of second gear”. Christen Me is in as a short as $1.80 to win the $200k classic but after seeing this trial you wouldn’t want your money on anything else . . .   http://www.trotstv.com.au/?id=8101

Aussies coming for Auckland Cup: It’s been well documented that I’m Themightyquinn is now coming to the Auckland Cup next week but what is not as widely known is that star four-year-old I’m Victorious is coming too. The Perth-trained harness racers will be able to fly home direct from Auckland post the Cup so in actuality the travel arrangements work better for them as well as having the chance to run for $250k NZ. The NZ TAB has

‘Harness Hotshots’ available online: The latest renewal of NZ’s #1 online harness racing tipping show is now live for viewing on HRNZ or through Facebook, if you prefer. This week the spotlight is shone upon Alexandra Park and their Premier race card. Here’s the link http://bcove.me/dpr2xag4

Ken’s Countdown: As earlier indicated Ken Barron is on 997 driving wins in NZ. He has just the one drive tonight but has a nice book of five on Sunday incuding picking up a couple of Cran Dalgety’s.  He’s a rough hope to get it done over the weekend.

Australasian Young Drivers Update: With six of the nine heats done-and-dusted below are the standings. The three Kiwi drivers have moved further away from the bottom of the pack after last night’s but finding it hard to bridge the gap on the leaders for now. The way the cards have fallen perhaps Zac Butcher is our best chance for success. Though seventh currently he has a handy drive in the first heat tonight at Penrith, around the ½ mile circuit and gets a good drive with heaps of gate-speed in the final heat on Sunday at Menangle. His second drive tonight has drawn poorly but is one that might be able to do the work to get him into the contest.

Points are:

1st Chris Voak (WA) 57

2nd= Ellen Tormey (VIC) 56

2nd= Rebecca Bartley (VIC) 56

4th Josh Dickie (NZ NI) 43

5th= Matthew Williamson (NZ SI) 36

5th= Amanda Turnbull (NSW) 36

7th Zac Butcher (NZ) 34

8th Kelli Dawson (QLD) 30

9th Todd Rattray (TAS) 29

10th  Jayson Finnis (SA) 13

HRNZ MEDIA BITES, Feb 26, 2012

Most roads lead to Menangle this Sunday: It’s been built up as one of the all-time great racedays ever in Australia and there’s a good chance it might live up to the hype and the billing. This Sunday afternoon Menangle the NSWHRC host an epic race day that offers stakes totalling AUD$2 million. Of the 10 races New Zealand-trained horses have involvement in nine, which is great. Something like 60 New Zealand-bred horses will compete across the programme, which will give most Kiwi harness fans some sort of vested interest. Of course many of those expats have only recent departed too. First race runs at NZ 2.30pm.

The highlight of course if the Inter Dominion Final. Kiwis Terror To Love, Mah Sish and Sir Lincoln (Lincoln Royal) fly the flag there. The NZTAB has Terror To Love as a $3 favourite. The other big features are the NZ Oaks (R3), Lady Ship Mile (R4), NSW Derby (R5), Chariots Of Fire (R6), Bohemia Crystal FFA (R8) and Glenferrie Farm Challenge (R9). That’s seven Group One races in succession from NZ3.20pm to NZ6.55pm. The Inter Dominion Final runs at NZ 5.40pm. Trackside TV will be giving the day tremendous coverage also.

I Can Doosit is out but Kiwis should bowl ’em in Glenferrie Challenge: I Didn’t Do It is the only horse standing between New Zealand and a total domination of the $200k Glenferrie Challenge on Sunday at Menangle. The race that pits five Kiwis against five Aussies has an interesting make up with the depth of the Australian contingent a talking point. One of the more puzzling selections is the Metropolitan maiden My High Expectations whose biggest payday to date came when running second in the Victoria Trotters Derby in 2010. The Kiwi team has been joined by Vulcan who steps in for I Can Doosit. He joins Stig, Escapee, Sovereignty and The Fiery Ginga. It promises to be an exciting race with lots of early speed and horses with varying racing styles. Could this be the chance for The Fiery Ginga to claim his maiden Group 1? From barrier one he’ll get every chance.

Wins and solid showings in several of the major races could see as much as a million dollars returning to the New Zealand industry (provided the winning owners don’t party too hard in Sydney), which will be great for the flow of money within the sport here.

Auckland carnival commences Friday: The precursor to what promises to be an exciting Trillian Trust Auckland Cup night springs into life this Friday. The two Woodlands Northern Derby Preludes have attracted top quality runners and all things being equal those boys could well be joined by Adore Me in the Derby after she takes a likely win in the Pascoes The Jewellers Northern Oaks (NZ 9.22pm). And what a story that would be for the connections of Adore Me who just happen to sponsor the Woodlands Northern Derby. Fixed Odds are out for the Derby and Auckland Cup. Adore Me is a $2.70 Derby favourite. Terror To Love a $3 shot in the Auckland Cup.

– The other feature on the night is the MUMM City of Auckland FFA (G2). A nice blend of youth and experience combine in the 11-horse field. Franco Ledger makes his northern debut and it’s also good to welcome back to the track horses the calibre of Pembrook Benny, Sleepy Tripp and Easy On The Eye.

 – The Auckland Trotting Club is pulling out all the stops for those attending the races over Cup week. The addition of a Big Screen presence and a raft of interesting racing related content will add flavour and value to those that are there live. Don’t forget the workouts from Alex Park last Saturday are online at HRNZ.    Some impressive workouts were recorded leading into this Friday’s meeting. No surprise the boys and girls in blue looked in great order.

 – Worth noting too that next week at Alexandra Park the TAB are reigniting the Pick 6 somewhat. There’s a $50k terminating Pick 6 on the Tuesday meeting and $100k guaranteed on Friday night, Auckland Cup night.

Lincoln Royal NZ- Veterinary Inspection (ex HRNSW): On Tuesday HRNSW Regulatory Veterinarian Dr Martin Wainscott conducted a veterinary inspected of LINCOLN ROYAL NZ (Sir Lincoln) at his Sydney stables after arriving from New Zealand last night. LINCOLN ROYAL NZ was found to be lame in the near (left) fore foot as a result of an abscess in the hoof. The horse is currently undergoing treatment for the condition and Dr Wainscott will conduct a further examination on Thursday morning.

Australasian Young Drivers Champs underway: Mixed results for our three reps yesterday in Goulburn. Josh Dickie lies second, Zac Butcher fifth and Matty Williamson eighth. They’re back in action from 5.15pm today at Menangle in two heats. They continue the competition at Bathurst tomorrow night, Penrith Thursday and wind up on Sunday at Menangle.

As luck would have it; no racing on Friday for the Young Drivers means Zac Butcher can sneak home to 10 drives at Alexandra Park on Friday night. He has many crucial drives across the weekend. Not the least of those Cheer The Lady on Sunday at Menangle, Five Card Draw and Pembrook Benny at Auckland.

Crack Aussie trotters heading to NZ: The towering three-year-old Aussie trotter Blitzthemcalder could be headed our way. He’s come back as a three-year-old very well (despite galloping last week) after dominating as a two-year-old and connections are setting their sights on an autumn/winter campaign in New Zealand which could culminate in the Ashburton Trust Harness Jewels. Should he come to New Zealand he’d be a very exciting addition to the three-year-old classics in the lead-up to the Harness Jewel in June.

Harness Hotshots: We have to take the opportunity to blow our own trumpet. Last week the HRTV online racing information show labelled six winners, which included each of our selectors’ ‘Best Bets’ of the week. They weren’t all hot pots either, which is nice. They were: Uncle Trevor ($5.10), Billythehuntedone ($3.30), Silver Whisp ($3.60), Galleons Triumph ($2.30), Royal Impression ($1.60 – opened $3.50 Fixed Odds) and Unico Crown ($3.90). This week the show will focus on the Premier action coming out of Auckland. Harness Hotshots will be online at HRNZ this Thursday evening. It can also be viewed through our Facebook page.

Milestone Watch: Ken Barron now on 997 NZ Driving wins. The way his team is going it seems he’ll deliver the 1000 very soon. Ken has just the one confirmed drive at Addington on Thursday night but is likely to have a handful of drives on Sunday for the Cheviot meeting at Addington.

HRNZ MEDIA BITES, February 19, 2012

Inter Dominion Grand Final Field Found: After the Australasian-wide heats Terror To Love, Lincoln Royal (Sir Lincoln), Excel Stride, Pub Blitz, Chariot King, Caribbean Blaster, Keeyang Cullen, Jaccka Clive, Mah Sish, Mach Alert, I’m Themightyquinn, Mysta Magical Mach, Washakie (1st Wild Card), Dasher VC (2nd Wild Card).

Since that field was announced Dasher VC’s connections have pulled the pin (lame in a fetlock), allowing Bitobliss into the race. An interesting side note of the Inter Dominion heats on Saturday night we have unconfirmed reports that the turnovers on the five heats fell short of the opening round of heats in Perth last year (four heats).

Sales Details: Monday’s Australasian Classic Sale was an interesting barometer for harness racing as it often proves to be. Good to see the average was up from $28k last year to $29.5k this time. Clearance rate not so hot though. 73.5% versus 80% last year. Bettor’s Delight as a stallion was immense. 12 of the top 20 lots including four of the top five. Top lot $210k for Bettor’s Delight colt ex Lauraella – and why wouldn’t it be!! He’s destined to become …something Stride in Australia for his career.

Don’t forget you can watch the Sales tomorrow and Thursday live through the PGG Wrighton Standardbred website http://www.standardbred.co.nz/

Sir Lincoln definite for Interdom: Despite needing a pre-race vet and experiencing some minor hoof issues in the build up to last Saturday, the big bay entire full steam ahead to the Inter Dominion Final on March 3. Mick Guerin reported on twitter Sir Lincoln will be beach-trained this week before shooting off to Sydney next Wednesday. He will have also taken tremendous improvement from his run the other night. The lead time ran by Sir Lincoln and Gold Ace on Saturday night of 39.4 represented the fastest ever lead-time over 2200m at Alexandra Park over 2200m. They buttoned off mid-stages and wound it up late but those early efforts didn’t hurt the cause of Terror To Love.

Dr Hook’s demise give Sovereignty green light: Dr Hook’s twisted bowl last week has paved the way for Sovereignty to make the five-horse NZ team for the Glenferrie Farm Challenge at Menangle on March 3. Reports suggest Dr Hook will thankfully make a speedy and full recovery. Yesterday the Aussies announced their team of five for the $200,000 event: Sundon’s Gift, Mister Zion, I Didn’t Do it, Cyclone Jake and Keystone Del – the latter pair both NSW trotters.

I Can Doosit sound in Melbourne: In his returning second he was very game but as he’s done at the start of several previous campaigns he’s been vulnerable and not as fluent as he possibly can be first-up. In fact the champ has a remarkably poor fresh record. Just two wins from eight goes in a fresh state. Though beaten by I Didn’t Do It on Saturday night in the EB Cochrane Cup he’ll improve sharply with the exertion. One would also think the big track at Menangle, with it’s long straights will help his cause also.

Harness Jewels 5YO races: The addition of three more Harness Jewels races will ensure the second day of the Ashburton Queens Birthday meeting this year is a cracker too. How the races will be broken down is yet to be 100% confirmed by it is hoped that meetings this week with between the Ashburton Trotting Club and HRNZ will make these determinations.  The IT Department already has the additional three divisions up on the website. Have a look and get a feeling for those that will be heading for Jewels day/weekend. http://www.hrnz.co.nz/harness-jewels/leader-board Reports from connections of Terror To Love are that they’re keen to see their charge there to sign off what could be a record-breaking and sensational five-year-old season.

Adore Me a chance at a Woodlands Northern Derby start?: Don’t be surprised if after she dominates her rivals in the Northern Oaks on March 1 that Adore Me backs up in the Derby against the boys a week later. The exciting filly, perhaps the best we’ve seen for many years has her trainer Mark Purdon fizzing and considering the prospect of tackling the boys. As a trainer with several very smart three-year-old males you’d expect the yardstick he uses to be pretty accurate.

Franco Nelson resumes: Franco Nelson is back on the track this week, at Auckland for the first time. He’ll be taking on a handy 2 to 3-Win field from barrier one. Franco Nelson is of course this season’s Sires’ Stakes champ and owner of the fastest 400m at Addington of 25.8. He lines up in Race 8 at 9.05pm.

Three Kiwi chances in Ladyship Mile: NZ will have three nice chances in the Ladyship Mile at Menangle on March 3. Bettor Cover Lover will spearhead the trio but she’ll have able accomplices in Elusive Chick and Cheer The Lady. It will be a very classy field and well worth the $200,000 prize money.

Australasian Young Drivers Championship next week: This Sunday our three fearless reps in the Australasian Young Drivers Championship travel to Sydney to compete in the championship that includes nine races culminating in a final heat on Inter Dominion Grand Final Day. Josh Dickie, Zac Butcher and Matthew Williamson are our charges. Josh has won the championship before. Matthew came very close the year Josh won in 2011 and Zac has never driven as well as he is at the moment so our chances of picking up another major harness racing trophy out of Australia are looking promising. Race dates for the series are Goulburn (Monday 25th), Menangle (Tuesday), Bathhurst (Wednesday), Penrith (Thursday), Menangle (Sunday)

Milestone watch: Ken Barron now on 993 NZ winning drives. Ken is a chance to advance towards the milestone with some nice drives at Addington on Friday night

CLUBS GET ADDITIONAL $1.4 MILLION

Media Release
15 February 2013

In welcome news for the harness racing industry, the Board of HRNZ has approved an additional distribution of $1.436 million to clubs.

This represents an increase of almost 5% of the annual funding extended to clubs.

In announcing this decision, HRNZ Chairman, Gary Allen stated: “Owners will be the key beneficiaries of this decision as this will result in increased returns to industry stakeholders over the next 12 months.”

This exciting news follows the New Zealand Racing Board’s (NZRB) recent welcome announcement of an increase in its forecast distribution to the three Racing Codes in the 2012/13 season from $132m to $135m.

HRNZ has reviewed its distributions to clubs in light of this additional funding and under expenditure in the season to date under the Code Funding Policy.

Gary Allen said: “this is great news for the industry and given the NZRB’s revised profit projections will be sustainable in the 2013/14 season. This will give increased confidence to all industry participants and result in improved returns to industry stakeholders.”

HRNZ has accordingly increased the minimum stakes per race from $4,500 to $5,000 from 1 April 2013.

Clubs will also be encouraged to review their stakes distribution models to develop incentives that encourage increased participation and field sizes.

Maximising field sizes across the industry is essential to maximising wagering domestically and internationally.

In developing the Code’s 2013/14 Funding Policy HRNZ will consider a number of options to incentivise starting numbers.

“The industry will be consulted in the development of these plans as we seek feedback from participants as to what would motivate them to start their horses more regularly and maintain or increase their breeding activity” said Gary Allen.

HARNESS JEWELS ADD 5YO RACES

The HRNZ Board has reviewed the current structure of the Harness Jewels.

The key issue considered was the change previously agreed to for 2013 of extending the four year old (4YO) division to include five year olds (5YO).

In an exciting change, the Board has resolved that for the 2013 Harness Jewels, three new Listed races will be introduced:

• 5YO Emerald for pacing entires and geldings – stake $150,000

• 5YO Diamond for pacing mares – stake $150,000

• 5YO Ruby for trotters – stake $100,000

The three races that were initially programmed as 4&5YO races will revert back to being just for 4YO’s at the same stakes levels.

Details of when the additional races will be staged will be confirmed over the next week with the Ashburton TC and New Zealand Racing Board.

It is likely the three additional 5YO races will be staged at the Ashburton TC meeting on Sunday, 2 June, with the other nine Jewels races hosted in their traditional format on Saturday, 1 June.

The new races will replace the three consolations that had previously been planned for the 4&5YO categories.

In making this announcement, HRNZ Chairman Gary Allen stated: “While the original decision was made in good faith, feedback from within the industry was supportive of the retention of the four year old categories to just that age group.”

“With the additional funding being made available by the NZRB in its revised profit projections, HRNZ is in a position now to fund these changes and respond positively to the industry. This will result in an additional $390,000 being distributed to industry participants and see three more outstanding races highlighting the best of harness racing.”

In announcing these changes, Gary Allen stressed they were for 2013 only.

“A full review will be conducted following the 2013 Harness Jewels with an aim to release the format for the 2014 series in August. While we may like to retain 12 races at that time, funding considerations will require careful attention.”

An undertaking is given that the industry will be consulted in this process. “The Harness Jewels are a key component of our racing calendar and positively regarded by harness racing enthusiasts. The input of the industry into the future shape of this will be worthwhile and welcomed,” said Mr Allen.

The Harness Jewels was introduced by HRNZ in conjunction with the Ashburton TC in 2007.

MARK NOTCHES 2ND SALES RACE WIN

Former world champion driver Mark Jones notched the second biggest win of his driving career with Classiesistar in the $225,000 PGG Wrightson Yearling Sales 3YO Open Pace at Auckland on New Year’s eve, 2012.

He had no hestitation putting Classiesistar up with the best he’d driven after he cleared out to win Monday’s 3YO feature by a big margin.

Mark’s biggest win came in an earlier PGG Wrightson Yearlng Sales Open Pace, a 2YO version 4 1/2 years earlier with the Doug Gale-trained Five Star Anvil when the stake was a whopping $292,498.

He siezed the opportunity with the Nigel McGrath-trained Classiesistar, leaving nothing to chance from the ace draw in the big listed 3YO sales series pace.

Classiesistar Attacked out of the gate by Mighty Flying Mac, Mark let the Cran Dalgety-trained rival take up the early running, but was soon out and attacking himself, taking control beginning the last 1600m.

Mark let the Christian Cullen-Lilsistar colt roll turning for home and he gapped his opposition, winning as he liked by 6 1/4 lengths from Cyamach, three back on the markers mostly, in a 1:58.9 rate for the mobile 2200m.

Classiesistar, raced by Melbourne owner John Wolfe, who earlier raced smart colt Classic Line from the McGrath stable, looked capable of capturing a big 3YO race.

He had been unbeaten in four starts leading into November’s NRM Sires Stakes Final, including a huge Sires Heat win at Addington after burning early from an outside gate and lasting to hold subsequent Final winner Franco Nelson.

However, he was luckless from the inside of the second row in the $165,600 Sires Final, running on late for seventh.

While he hadn’t been as tractable racing right-handed in two lead-ups, Nigel McGrath made the necessary gear adjustments to have him on song for the big race.

Meanwhile, at Rangiora, Alex, who Mark trains for Gold Coast owner Greg Brodie, added icing to a memorable day, getting home with a well-timed finish for driver Regan Todd for a Harness plus-victory in the $7420 Farewell to 2012 – Welcome to 2013 Mobile Pace.

Alex, a 4YO younger brother to (Glenferrie) Alexis, furthered his consistent formline, spearing through to win by a head from Magna, in a 1:59.8 rate for the mobile 2000m.

The win was the 4th in 25 starts for Alex, who has also picked up nine minor placings, for $26,054 in stakes.

HRNZ MEDIA BITES, FEBRUARY 11, 2012

Jack Smolenski’s passing: Harness racing lost one of the true legends of the sport late last week. Jack Smolenski, aged 78, died peacefully. Jack was a legend of NZ harness racing of course. A man before his time in many respects. A great horsemen and gentleman of the sport. He did plenty for harness racing away from his work as a trainer/driver. We’ll be paying tribute to Jack Smolenski and his life’s work later on in the week in the Harness Weekly & on hrnz.co.nz. There will no doubt be a huge turn out at his Memorial at Addington Raceway this Wednesday afternoon.

Adore Me jogs NZ 3YO filly Record, 1:52.4, (1609m) : It had to be one of the most impressive wins in recent times. A 3YO filly lowering the national mile record by 1.6 sections is a huge achievement. It appeared on the face of it she could have gone a touch faster too, if pressured in the run home. You get an idea of her unbridled talent when you consider she ran her first and last sections in 26.8. That’s two very impressive numbers to bookend any race in. Worth noting that from the winning post to the 700m mark is an uphill run.

Inter-Dominion Heats this week: This week the many Inter-Dominion Heats around Australia and one in NZ take place. Saturday night it all happens. Unfortunately the NZ heat is a bit light with just the three horses going around but there’s all quality and should make for an exciting contest nonetheless. Gold Ace, Terror To Love and Sir Lincoln are the select three. On Saturday night the heats will be beamed in from all around Australia and those heats, rankings of the heats and some wild card action will determined the runners for the Grand Final on March 3rd. There will be good coverage of all the heats on Trackside. Greg O’Connor & Craig Thompson will be sorting the NZ content while the live feed from Sky will cover off the Aussie heats.

Love On The Lawn Thursday Night: Addington Raceway’s hot new promotion takes flight this Thursday night. 5.35pm sees the first of nine races run at 20-minute intervals and between races there’ll be much happening for those on course. Love On The Lawn targets the single market but doesn’t discriminate against those in relationships so it should be great night out at Addington and something completely different to enjoy. The support of the Edge and The Rock radios stations through their DJs, prizes and promotions will add to the event also. Long range forecast looks good. Keep an eye out for Cupid’s colours too…

Innovative new sale by Macca Lodge: Macca Lodge in Southland are staging as Yearling Sale with a difference commencing on the 25th of February and staying open until all the horses are sold or 25 March. The 15 yearlings for sale have been broken in and are going along so they can be driven or inspected. Their website tells you more https://sites.google.com/site/sbsreared/ Great concept and we wish them all the best for it. Could start a trend?

Milestone Watch: Ken Barron 992 driving wins. David Butcher is in sight of 2000 too. He’s on 1919 career driving wins in NZ. Brother Phil is just two wins off driving 500 in NZ. Graeme Anderson is just one away from 200 training wins too.

Another season added to HRNZ database: Now our records on the Infohorse Database date back to the 1982/83 season. Of course under premierships and horse reports you can select a year going right back to 1983 and check out the respective tables.

Blast from the past: Former World Champion Driver Robert Cameron drove his first winner for more than four years when he reined Miss Yaldhurst (whom he trains) to win at Ashburton on Saturday. Cameron is one of our select group to have driven over 1000 winners.

Storer Motors NZ Trotters Oaks: The Met Club have nailed a three-year deal with long-time harness racing supporter Reg Storer and his car sales business for their trotting fillies’ event to be staged on 22 March. Storer has enjoyed good success over the years and hold close ties with trainer Peter Bagrie. The success has been mainly with pacers though so a foray into the trotting realm is a bit new. It’s a great year for Storer Motors to step in too, with many quality trotting fillies around. Last week’s winner Paramount Queen heads the list but then there’s Habibti, Aile Rouge, Juneamy Castleton, Miss Middleton, Millicent, Pyramid Monarch, Secret Sundaze and Mollys Luck to name a few.

Auckland Workouts: Sporadically Auckland TC will supply workouts directly to HRNZ for the website. Keep on the look out for them as there may be some gold amongst them. The first of them was the Auckland TC workouts on Feb 9. The idea is to ensure the key workouts leading into many of their bigger events are covered. Of course these will only be workouts not covered by Trackside; i.e. Saturday workouts.
