OVERPORT LODGE FILLIES TO DEBUT ON SUNDAY

Overport Lodge 2YO pacing fillies, I Get Around and Smoke N Fire, are straight into racing mode at Timaru on Sunday after placing at the Ashburton trials on Tuesday.

The stablemates will both start from the inside two barriers on the second row in a $25,000 Magness Benrow Sires Stakes Fillies Heat.

Ricky May is to drive Smoke N Fire, with Blair Orange engaged for I Get Around.

I Get Around stretches out for trainer Mark Jones behind winner MacKenzie at the Ashburton trials on Tuesday.

I Get Around stretches out for trainer Mark Jones behind winner MacKenzie at the Ashburton trials on Tuesday.

The race features only one to have raced, the Robert Dunn-trained Kotare Kasai, who ran second to Rakaporsche at Wyndham on February 1 in a 1:58.4 2YO fillies mile.

I Get Around, a Bettor’s Delight filly and the first foal from Runaround Rhonda (raceplaced half-sister by Artsplace to Saveapatrol), qualified at Ashburton on December 9 when second to Dame Puissant, clocking 2:00.7.

She led early from the two gate in Tuesday’s 2YO fillies mobile pace, trailed the Mark Purdon/Natalie Rasmussen-trained MacKenzie from the 1200m and fought solidly over the leaders last 800m in a smart 56.5s and final 400m in 26.8s.

The winner ran the heat in 1:59.8 with I Get Around a length back second in 2:00.

Smoke N Fire, a Courage Under Fire half-sister to the ill-fated Smoke N Santanna (1:58.4) and fellow two-race winner Smoke N Grin, qualified first-up in 2:03.3 (1609m).

The daughter of good racemare Smoke N Mirrors (10 wins & $189,675) ran second to the Allstars filly Northern Velocity, a Mach Three half-sister to top pacer Pembrook Benny (1:53.6), Pembrook Caesar (1:53, Aust) and the former Mark Jones-trained filly Holme Fire (five wins, 1:58.8), who held in 2:03.2, the last 800m in 58.6s and final 400m in 27.5s.

“They went good but Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen’s ones were a bit too good for us,” said trainer Mark Jones.

Other Allstars fillies in the second 2YO fillies heat in Arden’s Choice (Panspacific Flight half-sister to Bettor’s Strike) and Dream About Me (Bettor’s Delight half-sister to Christen Me and Hands Christian) will debut in Sunday’s Magness Benrow Heat.

Arden’s Choice, who qualified earlier in 1:59.1, wasn’t hurried to run fourth in MacKenzie’s heat, with Dream About Me, also not extended, finishing seventh, but qualifying by running 2:01.1.

Overport Lodge-trained maiden Richard Le Fort (3g Jereme’s Jet-Belle’s Girl), who qualified at Addington on February 2 in 2:32.4 (mobile 2000m), backed up in a fast maiden heat on Tuesday.

He trailed Regan Todd’s raceplaced maiden Sandvik Star (Robbie Close) but was unable to stay with Sandvik Star and another raceplaced maiden Royal Caroline, who drew out by 6 1/2 lengths in the run home.

Sandvik Star ran the mobile 2400m in a useful 2:59.9 (2:00.6 mile rate), the last 800m in 57.6s and final 400m in 28.9s.

Overport Lodge squaregaiters, Eyre I Come and Charming Lavra, are Auckland-bound this week to try their luck in suitable handicap grade races at Auckland over the next few weeks.

Eyre I Come, a C3-assessed trotter good enough to win at Addington on New Zealand Cup day, while C1 3YO filly Charming Lavra has been placed at her last two grass track starts.

Both will be eligible for $20,000-stake trots at the Auckland Cup meeting.

GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME RUNS 1:56.3 ASHBURTON MILE

Goodness Gracious Me, rewarded after four placed efforts this term with a career best 1:56.3 winning mile at Ashburton on Saturday, will target the $20,000 Southern Belle Speed Series Final at Winton on March 14.

“I was think of taking her to Auckland, but she can stay around here for the Southland Final,” said trainer Mark Jones.

Goodness Gracious Me, now a 1:56.3 winning miler with nearly 54,000 in earnings for owners John and Gay Tate.

Goodness Gracious Me, now a 1:56.3 winning miler with nearly 54,000 in earnings for owners John and Gay Tate.

“She will likely head to Australia to race before going in foal next season,” he said.

Mark finished second with Telemecanique (subsequently a 1:52.2 US miler) behind Beaudiene Bad Bade in the 2010 Southern Belle Speed Series Final, the winner going 1:57.2.

Goodness Gracious Me is also eligible for the final Southern Belle series heat at Invercargill on February 15.

She finished a luckless third in the first Southern heat behind Al Raza and Happy Heidi at Winton on December 29, the winner clocking 1:55.

Goodness Gracious Me, downgraded to a C1 assessment after her Winton placing, was too good after being caught wide into the first turn at Ashburton, then being obliged to race in the open.

The 4YO Christian Cullen-Delight Me mare was travelling like the winner turning for home for Blair Orange and won as she liked by 1 1/4 lengths from Culinary Delight, Little Tess, and tiring pacemaker Angelina Jolie.

The consistent racemare took her earnings to just under $54,000 for breeder owners, John and Gay Tate, with Saturday’s win. She has now raced 28 times for five wins and 13 placings.

She ran third in last year’s Group Two Southland Oaks Final behind Royal Counsel and Raksdeal, and has a fastest placed mile rate of 1:55.3 when second to Raksdeal in an Invercargill Nevle R Fillies Heat in January 2014.

Goodness Gracious Me will have a useful broodmare career when her racing ends.

She is from our-race winner Delight Me (p3, 1:58.9 mile rate, 1950m), a Bettor’s Delight half-sister to Milly Me (1:52, US, 3 NZ wins, 17 USA wins) and Bella Me (p3, 1:57.8 mile rate, 1700m, three wins).

Her grand-dam Estabella (TT, 1:56.3), was a two win sister to Fear Me (1:57, US, 3 NZ & 3 USA wins), and a half-sister to former top pacers Pocket Me (1:53.7, Aust, 13 wins including an Interdominion Heat and a third to Yulestar and Attitagain in the 2001 Brisbane Interdominion Grand Final) and Talk About Me (10 wins).

Fourth dam Nanoose (three wins) was a Young Charles half-sister to dual 1983 NZ & Great Northern Derby winner Mighty Me.

Meanwhile, faster class stablemate Johnny Fox is having a week off after taking out the Nelson and Invercargill Cups in January.

“We’ll get him back and look at either the Cheviot Cup on March 1 or take him to Auckland. There isn’t a lot for him until then,” said Mark.

ICE CRUSHER HOLDS IN ADDINGTON TRIAL

Overport trainer Mark Jones qualified the two-year-old Christian Cullen gelding Ice Crusher, five seconds under the required standard, at Addington on Monday, February 2.

Ice Crusher led from the outset in the mobile 2000m qualifier, and although he had the Jimmy Curtin-trained Mach Three gelding Hickstead for company over the last 200m, kept up a useful run to hold by a neck in 2:31.1 for the mobile 2000m.

Ice Crusher does enough to hold Hickstead over 2000m in 2:31.1 at the Addington trials on February 2, 2015.

Ice Crusher does enough to hold Hickstead over 2000m in 2:31.1 at the Addington trials on February 2, 2015.

A brother to last Sunday’s smart Wyndham winner Shak’n Cullen, Ice Crusher rated 2:01.5 for the trip, quickening over his last 800m in 58.1s and final 400m in 29s.

Ice Crusher had finished close seconds to the Purdon/Rasmussen-trained Mastercraftsman, and the Cran Dalgety-trained Linton Shard, in his two Rangiora workouts in late last month.

He is bred to be above average with his brother Shak’n Cullen (1:58.9) now the winner of four from 34 for $33,424 in stakes.

Their dam Helena Kilena (Soky’s Atom-Hilarious Helen) won five races for $36,024 in stakes and retired with a fastest 1:57 winning mile rate over 1950m at Addington.

Helena Kilena is a sister to Fearless Freda (p2, 1:59), the 1998 $106,700 PGG Yearling Sales 2YO Filly Pace winner when trained by Cran Dalgety, and a half-sister to Franco Himself (1:55.4, US, 3 NZ wins, 18 USA wins) and Awesome Andy (p3, 1:58.6, a four time winner in both NZ and Australia.

Another sister in Hilarious Heather (three wins) has left the useful Cran Dalgety-trained winners Holy Hero (1:56.5, five NZ & 3 Aust. wins) and Collecting (p3, 1:58.6), the winner of four including a NZ 3YO fillies stand start record of 2:46.3.

Helena Kilena has also let Lindennys Laddie (by Bettor’s Delight), renamed in Australia as Dashing Stride (p2, 1:59.6), the winner of five, and the qualified Tina Kilena (by Real Desire), who was retired after one unplaced start.

The latter’s first foal, a Changeover colt, named Times A Changing, is being offered by Lindenny Lodge for sale on the second day of the NZ Premier Yearling Sale in Christchurch on February 18.

Helena Kilena’s grand-dam Golden Guest won nine and ran third against the boys behind the Alister Kerslake-trained stablemate Bachelor Star in the 1971 New Zealand Derby at Addington (another filly Van Glory ran second and Roydon Roux was fourth).

Golden Guest was a Garrison Hanover sister to a top Jack Smolenski-trained 1970s pacer in Speedy Guest (19 wins including a Great Northern Derby and a NZ Messenger.

True Guest (Light Brigade-Loyal Guest), the dam of Speedy Guest and Golden Guest, was a half-sister to Adio star, the 1978 NZ Broodmare Of the Year, who left three NZ Derby winners, the above-mentioned Bachelor Star (1971), Main Adios (1975) and Game Adios (1979).

True Guest also became the dam of former top filly/mare Hilarious Guest, who added to the family’s New Zealand Derby-winning history in 1982 in the hands of Mark’s father Peter Jones, for trainer Maurice Vermeulen, holding Peter’s father Derek with Portfolio, Mel’s Boy and Enterprise.

Hilarious Guest, who died in 2008 after leaving 14 foals, won 21 races & $283,230, also beating the boys in a NZ Sapling Stakes at two when driven by Peter Jones, and in the NZ Messenger 4YO Championship when reined by Peter Wolfenden.

She also finished second in two Auckland Cups, behind Roydon Glen in 1985, and Armalight in 1983.

Meanwhile, the Mark Jones stable also qualified Richard Le Fort (3c Jereme’s Jet-Belle’s Girl) and Power Bolt (3c Changeover-Hot Blooded Woman when third and fourth respectively in their mobile 2000m heat on Monday.

Richard Le Fort ran 2:32.4 behind Mickey Jay and Volatile Lavra, while Power Bolt, fourth, ran 2:33.8.

Four-win mare but C1-assessed Goodness Gracious Me, runnerup in three of her last four south appearances, warmed up for Ashburton on Saturday with a front-running win in the c1 and faster mobile heat at Monday’s trials.

The Christian Cullen mare held Roo Star by 1 1/4 lengths in the run home in 2:26.9 (1950m), a mile rate of 2:01.2, quickening over her last 800m in 57.2s and final 400m in 28.1s.

She contests the C1-2 Studholme ‘Premier Yearlings’ Mares Mobile Pace over 1609m at Ashburton this Saturday.

BLAIR ORANGE BECOMES 23RD TO REIN 1000 NZ WINNERS

Blair Orange, a regular stable driver for good friend and Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones, became the 23rd reinsman to drive 1000 NZ winners at Addington on Friday,
January 30.

Blair Orange salutes for win No. 1000.

Blair Orange salutes for win No. 1000.

He achieved the feat with a positive drive behind the well fancied Change Time for current boss Ken Barron in the C3-5 Resource Recyling Technologies NZ Ltd Mobile Pace.

Blair worked to the front with the in-form Christian Cullen mare, the trailed The Brigadier from the 1100m, before driving through strongly in the straight.

His assocation with the Mark Jones stable has resulted in the pair combining to win the last two Invercargill Cups with Johnny Fox and Saveapatrol.

“I’d like to thank all those that have helped me from the year dot when I was a little known kid,” Blair said.

“For someone not from a harness racing family, I can only thank the people who encouraged me and gave me a chance.”

He made special mention of trainers such as Tim Butt, Mike Austin, Mark Jones, Mark Purdon and Andrew Stuart, who have been big supporters of his career.

Blair is congratulated by daughter Lily, and wife Lisa, after his milestone achievement.

Blair is congratulated by daughter Lily, and wife Lisa, after his milestone achievement.

Blair also thanked his wife Lisa for allowing him to travel to the various meetings while she looks after son Harrison, and daughter, Lily, at home.

He opened his driving account at Reefton in 1996, reining Whizza Nova to win for Tim Butt’s Premier Stables, and the wins have flowed regularly every season since.

When working for the Allstars stable, he won numerous feature races driving Jay’s Debut, Lennon, Ohoka Arizona, Highview Tommy, Joyfuljoy, Auckland Reactor, Kotare Mach, Russley Rascal, Lancome, Cyclone U Bolt and Adore Me.

Teaming up with Ken Barron’s Toliman Lodge this term, Blair’s success rate continues to be high, having reined 55 seasonal winners.

Ken Barron, himself, joined the 1000-win drivers club in April, 2013, but subsequently seconded Blair this term as his stable driver with Ken concentrating on the training side of his operation.

Blair returns to scale behind Change Time, after racking up his 1000th win at Addington on Friday, January 30, 2015.

Blair returns to scale behind Change Time, after racking up his 1000th win at Addington on Friday, January 30, 2015.

Blair joins as elite list including Mark Jones, who at one stage was the fastest NZ driver to reach 1000 wins, before Dexter Dunn took over as the quickest to reach 1000 at Addington in 2012.

The late “maestro” Maurice Holmes was NZ’s first to 1000 driving wins in 1960.

The full 23 achievers in the 1000-win club are: Maurice Holmes, Peter Wolfenden, Robert Cameron, Mike and Colin De Filippi, Jack Smolenski, Tony Herlihy, Maurice McKendry, Anthony Butt, Jimmy Curtin, Ricky May,  David Butcher, Peter Ferguson, Brent Mangos, Mark Jones, James Stormont, David Butt, John Hay, Mark Purdon, Dexter Dunn, Ken Barron, Todd Mitchell, and Blair Orange.

The next likely to join the club is Southland’s Clark Barron, who is currently on 991 driving wins but is expected to emulate brother Ken’s achievement this term.

NZMTC, Feb. 14, race night cancelled

ADDINGTON, FEBRUARY 14, RACE NIGHT CANCELLED

Following on from the decision of the New South Wales Harness Racing Club and Harness Racing New South Wales to no longer conduct the Inter Dominion Qualifying Heat scheduled to be run at Addington Raceway on Saturday February 14, the New Zealand Metropolitan have elected not to proceed with the scheduled race meeting for that night.

This meeting has previously only been held to support the running of the Inter Dominion Heat and with the heat abandoned it leaves the entire event at a financial level where the Club is not prepared to proceed without this signature event as the main attraction.

This decision has been made and communicated as soon as possible to ensure any inconvenience for stakeholders is
minimised as much as possible.

The Sires Stakes race scheduled to run at this meeting will now be transferred to the Timaru Harness Racing Club’s meeting on February 15.

Further programming changes will be considered for Banks Peninsula on February 13, Timaru February 15, and Addington on February 20th in recognition of the changes this cancellation creates.

Any enquiries can be directed to Addington’s Racing Manager Brian Rabbitt by telephoning 03 338 9094 or Pete Ydgren at HRNZ on 03 09641189.

Johnny Fox sits parked to win Invercargill Cup

JOHNNY FOX DELIVERS CUTTING BREEZE IN INVERCARGILL CUP

Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones pulled off a satisfying training coup by transforming Johnny Fox into a G3 $40,000 Invercargill Cup winner on Saturday, January 24.

Johnny Fox’s career was at the crossroads after choking down badly on NZ Cup day in November, but a brief spell and the addition of an anti-choking device has turned him around.

The 6YO Western Terror gelding is relaxing in his races and growing in confidence.

Johnny Fox and Blair Orange, winners of the G3 $40,000 Ascot Park Hotel Invercargill Cup on Saturday, January 24.

Johnny Fox and Blair Orange, winners of the G3 $40,000 Ascot Park Hotel Invercargill Cup on Saturday, January 24.

So much so, he added a new string to his bow by moving up in the open over the last 2000m of the G3 $40,000 Ascot Park Hotel Invercargill Cup and proving just as effective cutting the breeze.

“He is racing great and was great for him to sit parked and win,” Mark said.

The win showed Mark he had toughened up as previously he was at his best as a very fast sit-sprint horse.

Johnny Fox sprinted up on the corner as if he’d had trailing cover, with driver Blair Orange cleverly putting the foot down as favourite Meticulous was held up three back on the markers.

Johnny Fox had Belkmyster (wide) for company turning in but held a comfortable advantage down the stretch, holding by three-quarters of a length in 4:04 (3200m).

The leaders picked up the pace over their last 800m in 57.8s and final 400m in a quick 26.9s.

Belkmyster held second with a length and a quarter to Meticulous winding up late to grab third ahead of early breaker The Wrath Of Robyn, who staged a big recovery for fourth.

The win, Mark’s third Invercargill Cup training win in the race in the last five years (earlier winning with Ohoka Texas and Saveapatrol), and the fifth for driver Blair Orange, came on top of prelude and Nelson Cup wins by Johnny Fox two weeks ago.

“I’m unsure where Johnny goes next as two weeks ago he was an out of form 4-win horse. Now he is a 7-win horse racing great.”

“I guess we have to look at the Addington Summer Cup ($25,000 free-for-all, 2600m) on Friday as he is racing great.”

Johnny Fox, purchased by the Butterworth Racing Syndciate after winning his first five for southern interests, has now won nine of 33 starts for $88,189.

The outstanding form by Johnny Fox this month is timely for Highview Standardbreds of Riverton who are offering a half-brother to the provincial cups winner at the NZ Premier Yearling Sale in Christchurch on February 17.

The colt is by by the Western Hanover stallion Well Said (p3, 1:47.6 & the winner of $2.5 million), while Johnny Fox’s dam, the unraced Ivy Rose, is by Island Fantasy from the good racemare Highview Rose (eight wins $51,409, including a Winton Cup).

Highview Rose (OK Bye-Rosewood Mistress), a half-sister to Highview Atom (17 wins incl. 13 in WA, 1:57.1 mile rate, 1742m) and Highview Jude (nine wins & $68,400), has left the good winners, Oreti Beach (1:52, US, five NZ wins, 22 USA wins), Highview Badlands nine wins incl. the 2007 Invercargill Cup for trainer Jimmy Curtin, and Highview Macushla (1:58.2 mile rate, 1700m, three wins).

Another daughter of Highview Rose in Highview Miss is the raced placed dam of Jenna’s Highview (p3, 1:57, 1 NZ win & 4 Aust. wins, runnerup in both the Australian & Queensland Oaks) and Highview Annwell (four wins).

* Blair Orange, a regular driver for the Mark Jones stable and the Butterworth Racing Syndicate, brought up his 999th NZ career win behind Johnny Fox on Saturday.

He looks certain to join the 1000-win driving club at Waterlea on Sunday.
