EX-OVERPORT LODGE WINNERS

Former Overport Lodge pacer Alex, now racing in New South Wales as Im Alex, notched his third win in eight Australian starts at Menangle on Monday, June 24.

Still raced by Queensland owner Greg Brodie, the Courage Under Fire gelding overcame the seven gate to win the Industry Day This Sunday Pace in 1:58 (1609m), the last 800m in 57.7s and final 400m in 28.6s.

AlexaddprelimAlex, now trained by Peter Walsh, reduced his lifetime mile best to 1:54.8 when scoring his second Menangle win on April 23.

Ex-Overport Lodge trotter Beau Brummell notched his sixth careeer win at Menangle on Tuesday.

He won as a $1.70 favourite in the day’s opener the $7000 Glenferrie Farm Trotters Mobile for NSW owner-trainer-driver Michael Muscat.

After settling handy on the outer, the 4YO Earl gelding finished best to score in a 2:01.7 for the 1609m, the last 800m in 60.4s and final 400m in 29.5s.

Racing as The Beau Brummell in Australia, he took his career record to 41 starts for six wins and 10 placings for $39,541 in stakes.

Charlotte Two added to the list of former Mark Jones-trained winners for the week when she scored Cobram, Victoria, on Wednesday, June 26.

The 5YO Live Or Die-Polly’s Atom mare placed in two of three NZ starts for breeders and former owners, Frances and Max Bowden.

Charlotte Two was too tough after being caught wide, then improving in the open, when taking out the C2 Bakers Delight Pace over 1670m.

She rated 1:57.4 for the journey, the leaders running their last 800m in 58s.

Charlotte Two had won her first three starts in Victoria last October-November. She has now raced in Australia five times for four wins and a second.

Forbury moves to Saturday afternoon

J Scott Latest News

FORBURY PARK TC, SATURDAY, JUNE 22

HRNZ and the NZRB have moved swiftly to co-ordinate re-jigged plans for South Island race meetings this week surrounding the forecast ‘weather bomb’ that will work its way up the island from Wednesday evening.

The abandonment of the Canterbury Racing meeting at Riccarton Park on Saturday, due to weather conditions, has opened up an opportunity for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting to shift on to that date and will no longer be held on Thursday night, as scheduled.

Despite the date shift for the Forbury Park meeting there is still a chance the meeting may not go ahead but the move has given it every chance to be run, especially as the southerly storm is forecast to ease through Friday.  There still may be travel issues that prevent the meeting from taking place.

The make up of the Forbury Park meeting is a relatively even split between Otago, Southland the Canterbury-based horses so the ability to move horses safely is of paramount importance.

The first race of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting this Saturday is scheduled for 11.40am – the last of 10 races at 4.26pm.

In fairness to all participants a final decision on whether the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting will be held will be made by 2.00pm on Friday.

With no snow forecast for the Marlborough region the club’s two-day meeting will continue as scheduled. Trainers are however encouraged to travel as soon as is practicable, given the impending snow forecast for the Canterbury region.

HRNZ MEDIA BITES, JUNE 19

Butcher largely luckless in World Drivers Champs:  David Butcher had fantastic time in France for the World Drivers Championship. He had a win on the second day but had a lot of bad luck around that. Harness Racing NSW caught up with David near the conclusion of the championship and these were his comments. “It’s been outstanding for me. I’ve just really enjoyed it. The racing has been a little bit different. They do things differently than we do at home but at the end of the day the horses either can or can not run.  I managed to get a win (in the championship) on day two and that was a high point for me. I really enjoyed that and the people who’ve been on tour with me. The guys are great, we’ve been having a fantastic time and the French have looked after us superbly.”

Butcher and wife Wanda will now enjoy a well-earned holiday break in Continental Europe, away from the snow and cold of New Zealand. Butcher, who sits on 98 wins for the season is likely to have a chance to crack the 100 wins when he returns just before the season’s end.

Records fall at Addington and Alexandra Park: A return to 2000m mobile racing at Addington last Friday night prompted two NZ Records. There was also one broken at Alexandra Park. The two records broken at Addington were by One Over Da Moon and Quite A Moment who won Breeders’ Crown non-tote heats. One Over Da Moon (2.30.9) took 3.5 seconds off the record previously held by Beau Brummell. He ran a 2.01.3 mile rate for his 2000 metres. Quite A Moment downed Sheemon narrowly and beat the 19-year-old record set by Inda Bank. Quite A Moment ran 2.30.4, lowering the previous record by 2.5 seconds.

At Auckland River Polka beat a tidy field of fillies and mares and she had to be good too. She ran 2.40.5 for the 2200m mobile, which meant she was the new owner of the three-year-old fillies record. She relieved Cheer The Lady of that record, sliding in under her 2.40.7 time by 0.2 of a second.

Horse of the Year Contenders soon to be released: With the upcoming Harnessworld.org Harness Racing Awards on July 27 the time is near for releasing the names of those chasing titles. This year 23 awards will be up for grabs. The decease in awards this year is attributed to the combining of the four-year-old and Aged categories. This will ensure some fascinating battles for age group and higher honours. Voting papers will be released shortly after the naming of the respective contenders/nominations. The Horse of the Year Awards will be held in Christchurch’s CBS Arena on Saturday July 27.

Smoken Up back in work: Ageless warrior Smoken Up is back in work for his Melton trainer Lance Justice. The winner of 67 races and more than $3 million in stakes will turn 11 years-old on September 1 in Australia. His main target for this preparation is the Miracle Mile.

Dexter Dunn, a chance at another 200: Our top driver has already amassed 174 wins for the season. And there’s a good chance he could once again surpass the 200 mark in wins. Dunn will be driving right the way through until the end of the season so there’s every chance he’ll do it again. In the last full month of driving (May) he won 25 races. Admittedly, May is a busier month but with half of June yet to unfold and opportunities up and down the South Island Dunn looks capable creating another little piece of history. Dunn’s record of 220 in a season, set in 2011, looks safe for another year however.

Good week for Harness Hotshots: The regular HRTV selections video had a good week last week, finding seven winners from its nine selections. No big dividends but multis and all-ups may yielded good returns. The only ones to miss were a fresh-up Besotted and Given who broke at the start in his race before finishing a meritorious fourth.

$100,000 terminating Pick at Thames on Friday: Last week the two respective Pick 6 dividends paid $40k and $32k respectively. To keep the ball rolling on the Pick 6s $100,000 terminating carrot will be offered this Friday night. The Thames club have assembled some even fields for the Pick 6 legs so it will be a stern challenge for punters who are chasing a slice of the $100,000.

HRNZ MEDIA BITES, June 12

After the hectic period that was the Harness Jewels normal transmission resumes for the winter period. Below is what we see as the noteworthy bits.

David Butcher – World Drivers Championship: After two days of competition David Butcher is running 8th in WDC 2013. He’s up four places from Day One’s disaster and isn’t that far off second after a win and a placing at Caen. Leader, Frenchman Pierre Vercryusse has a 40-point advantage so he’ll take all sorts of running down. It is literally anyone’s guess for second at this stage with 11 of the 20 races still remaining. Tune into hrnz.co.nz for further updates, the HRNZ HRTV Player, ‘Like’ David Butcher and/or HRNZ on Facebook or catch updates via Twitter. As the championship progresses this website http://wtcparis2013.letrot.com/ should also be a useful source of information.

Breeders Crown Heats Kicking off: Two strong Breeders Crown heat will be run as non-totes at Addington on Friday. Run just five minutes apart the heats. Jewels winner One Over Da Moon highlights the 2YO Trot, while Quite A Moment and Sheemon will battle it out with three others for the right to run in the show in August at Tabcorp Park Melton.

Addington 2000-metre mobiles return: Since the move to 1950m mobiles there has traditionally only been the NZ Pacing FFA run over 2000m. That’s all about to change with three tote races to be run this week over 2000m and two non-totes also. Be interesting to see what comes of the racing over 2000m this week.

Junior Drivers Championship contenders found: The 12 drivers to competing the NZ Champs on July 4 have been found. They are: (NI) Zac Butcher, Josh Dickie, Simon Lawson, Andrew Veint, Roydon Downey, Andre Poutama, (SI) Sam Ottley, Matty Williamson, Brad Williamson, Jack Trainor, Rory McIlwrick and Mitchell Kerr. In further good news for leading juniors a competition will be staged in Auckland on July 26. This comp will feature five juniors from the North and five from the South Island.

Givethejotobarnsy a great story of perseverance: A horse like Givethejobtobarnsy wouldn’t have made it in many other stables. John Versteeg liked him though, he saw something in the rangy 17.2 Washington VC gelding and that faith is now being repaid. As a bigger, weaker younger horse he was a knee-knocker and still is but his strength and will is overcoming any demons, as his double at Nelson (incl Winter Cup) last week illustrates. Barnsy took 16 starts to clear maidens but has since won nearly 50% of his next 10 runs. The progression he’s showing and the times he’s running is drawing comparisons with Versteeg’s last top-liner Good Mate who won nine races and almost beat Christian Cullen in a stirring record breaking battle back in 1998. Givethejobtobarnsy has now been earmarked for the Blenheim meeting next week.

John and Josh Dickie to form partnership: The father and son pair of Josh and John Dickie are joining forces in the new season and taking up residence at Kerry Hoggard’s Rosslands Farm in Clevedon. Gareth Dixon who trained there for many years is shifting to Pukekohe and that has opened up this opportunity for the Dickies. Josh finishes up as a junior driver this season after no less than 158 driving wins in NZ.

Butts bringing in exciting trotters from Europe: Three trotters have been earmarked for New Zealand by Tim and Anthony Butt and will head south in the coming season. All three are stallions so there are longer-term prospects with them as well.

Positive signs in turnovers and stakes: With increasing competition for the wagering dollar it’s good to see harness racing turnover has increased by 3.6% to 19 May. Also a positive sign is that we’re running more races at slightly higher stakes averages. We’re up 68 races to the same time (19 May) last season and the average stake is $10,071. This only represents a minimal increase of 0.4% per race but also an increase in over $780,000 in net stakes.

Minimum $75,000 Pick 6 Jackpot at Forbury Park: $41,000 jackpotted at Forbury Park last Thursday night so there is the promise of a very attractive pot this Thursday in Dunedin. The TAB has guaranteed $75,000 but expect the pool to grow well in advance of that. This should prove a nice winter betting proposition for harness punters. The fields don’t look too easy so a good payout is in store.

HRNZ MEDIA BITES, MAY 22

Hi everyone, we saw another championship performance by Adore Me last week. Now she, and countless other top-class performers, make a bee-line for the Trust Ashburton Harness Jewels Weekend, June 1 and 2.

Lone Star man with nine Jewels lives: We believe popular harness racing identity Trevor Casey will create history on Jewels weekend. Casey, the man behind the Lone Star Riccarton will no doubt be battening down the hatches for a busy period around the Jewels in his restaurant but at the races he’ll have an incredible nine runners across four races. Trotters are his primary passion; the likes of Stent, Escapee, Daenarys Targaryen fly the flag for his ownership but add in glamour two-year-old pacers Maxim and Sky Major, promising pacing filly Spirit Of Art, juveniles Hot Pants, Schleck and Zacharia, and you have arsenal to attack one of the great racing weekends.

This week; a final blowout for many Jewels hopefuls: This weekend there are some big names hitting the track to bolster their claims for the Trust Ashburton Harness Jewels. Perhaps the biggest name is Ohoka Punter, who was surprisingly beaten at Cambridge last week when looking well down on his best. This week though he’ll no doubt strip fitter and top off his preparation in Race 6 at Alexandra Park on Friday night. A free-for-all at Addington on Thursday night has attracted a nice field. Included in the field are Easy One The Eye, Elusive Chick, Star Of Isis, Smiling Star and Christen Me, the current boom horse of New Zealand. Earlier in the night Border Control will tangle with Elios, Mister Mara and Classiesistar, in what should be an intriguing pre-Jewels contest.

The two-year-old trot at Addington (Race 8) will act as somewhat as a dress rehearsal for the Neumanns Tyres & the Tyre General 2YO Ruby. No less than seven of the top 13 ranked two-year-olds will take part, giving punters a good line as to the possible outcome of the ‘100-grander’ next Saturday.

Box Seat Trust Ashburton Harness Jewels Special:  Next Wednesday night at 8.30pm ‘The Box Seat’ returns for a 90-minute Trust Ashburton Harness Jewels special. The Trackside team are already working diligently at pulling together an extensive preview that ties in most of the major players, has in-depth analysis and all the bits and pieces you need to know for Jewels weekend.

Jewels Workouts: This Saturday at noon in Ashburton the Trust Ashburton Harness Jewels workouts will be run. These workouts may take on even more importance than previous years as the rough weather in Christchurch over the past week or so could be disrupting some preparations. The workouts will air on Trackide at 9am Wednesday morning and also be available on hrnz.co.nz.

Harness Jewels Colours: All 12 of the Trust Ashburton Harness Jewels leaders will wear the Yellow Leaders’ colours on Jewels weekend and all connections. The respective leaders are: Star Of Isis, Daenerys Targaryen, Adore Me, Royal Aspirations, Venus Serena, Stent, Christen Me, Maxim, Ohoka Punter, Bettor Cover Lover, Springbank Sam and Terror To Love. Those names alone must get the blood pumping of any harness racing fan. Connections will receive their commemorative colours at a function in Ashburton the Friday night before the Trust Ashburton Harness Jewels. The function will be hosted by the trio of Mick Guerin, Greg O’Connor and Mark McNamara.

Gold Ace back on track after trial win: The Ashburton track was the scene for Gold Ace getting his Jewels campaign back on track yesterday. A bold, fresh Gold Ace toyed with his rivals in the feature mobile and on an off-track he carved out impressive sectionals. Gold Ace beat fellow Jewels aspirants River Black and Pemberton Shard. He ran a pedestrian time overall but looked very sharp sprinting up a 26.8s final section and easily accounting for two smart horses. Other features on the day saw Eric Clapton and Venus Serena annihilate their opposition, both winning by eight lengths.

Milestones aplenty: Last week young trainer-driver Nathan Williamson moved into unchartered territory. He reined his 64th winner at Oamaru on Sunday on Latheronwheel, a horse he trains. That win put him one past his previous best driving haul of 63, achieved in the 2008. Williamson is also the leading Southland trainer with 23 wins to his credit. A tremendous effort for the young man who celebrated his 25th birthday just last week.

Mark Purdon ticked over 100 training wins for the season. This is the first time he’s achieved the feat by himself as a trainer. He’d previously racked up four centuries in partnership with Grant Payne.

Ricky May too is poised for a milestone. He’s on 99 driving wins for the season and looks odds-on to surpass his best ever season of 105. Meanwhile Dexter Dunn has a 59-win win lead in the Drivers’ Premiership.

HRNZ MEDIA BITES, MAY 15Hrnz logo

The build-up to the 2013 Trust Ashburton Harness Jewels is well and truly on. This Friday’s superb meeting at Addington and other supporting meetings will only add to the build-up.

Purdon’s Haul: It’s already been well documented the effort of the Mark Purdon team of horses last Saturday at Addington. Runners for the stable pocketed a cool $292k for their efforts in six of the 12 races. Looking forward to this Friday night the stable has 12 runners over five races and promises to dominate the features once again. Last week’s big winners, Adore Me and Isaiah, back up, while horses the quality of Fly Like An Eagle are added to the potent strike force.

Harness Jewels Movers and Shakers: Last week we saw some horses make their play for runs in the Jewels. Some clearly notable ones but some snuck under the radar too. Two-year-old trotter Majestic Time was a smart winner at Timaru last Sunday and with her win she’s bolted from nowhere to sixth on her Jewels leader Board. She’ll give trainer Mike Ward his first Jewels runner next month.

Whisper Jet looked a forlorn hope to make the Jewels last week. She was somewhere in the 30s on the table but with her second to Adore Me and $21k banked she’s now ‘right there on the list’.

Carpenter’s Daughter was another badly in need of a winning turn. Not only did she win at Addington last Saturday but she was very impressive. The four-year-old mare was at $26 and now into $3.50.

Little Miss Sunshine won the Girls’n Gigs race at Timaru last Sunday and did so with HRNZ staffer Charlotte Hunter in the sulky. That win and the $5k she earned has leapfrogged here into 11th on the 5YO Diamond standings.

NZ Records to Isaiah/Royal Aspirations: Last week two NZ Records fell. Royal Aspirations decimated the 2200m record for a three-year-old trotter. He took a second off Sovereignty’s record and he also lowered the Male Trotting mark previously held by I Can Doosit by 0.1. Royal Aspirations dazzled by running the 2200m trip in 2:43. Isaiah took half a second off the two-year-old 1950m record for colts and geldings. Rating a 1:55.5 mile rate, he ran the journey in 2:20. Tintin In America held the record previously.

Who needs Jewels cash this week? Goodness Gracious me steps out for the first time from the Steve McRae barn at Invercargill and she can make the Jewels with a win. She is currently 16th on the list after Priscilla’s Girl was withdrawn yesterday. Goodness Gracious Me proved her worth in the early season but now, after missing the triple crown in Auckland she’s the fresh player on the scene but nothing short of a win at Ascot Park on Saturday will be enough to get her a start in the 2YO Diamond on Jewels Day 1 in June.

Gold Ace back on Jewels path: Good news this week that Gold Ace has scoped clear (98%) after his lung infection that laid him low in the NZ Messenger. Gold Ace is now in Christchurch preparing for the Trust Ashburton Harness Jewels 5YO Emerald. Of course Gold Ace won the corresponding race two years ago and last year was a late scratching. It’s been a tumultuous ride for Steven Reid and connections of the crack Bettor’s Delight pacer but if all goes well in the next two and half weeks there could be a sense of timing about him leading into another clash with arch- rival Terror To Love on Sunday June 2. For more details of the Gold Ace situation check out this link. http://www.hrnz.co.nz/news/1391-gold-ace-healthy-and-ready-for-jewels-tilt

Ohoka Punter & Franco Nelson return this week: Two of our glamour pacers are back in action this week. Ohoka Punter will resume at Cambridge on Thursday night while Franco Nelson debuts from the Robert Dunn stable at Oamaru on Sunday. Both horses have been on light duties in recent times, looking to peak for the big one on Jewels Day and it will be great to see them shining brightly on race day again.

New HRNZ web feature for media and trainspotters: A new search tool has been added to the HRNZ website. Through the Infohorse Database with a search of Trainers and Drivers you can now find a horseman’s/woman’s wins and placings for any season from 1981. You can do this by searching the various premierships or the database. The key is to click on the season (underlined) of a trainer or driver’s record. That is where the magic happens. From there you can filter and manipulate data to find out just about anything the trainer achieved that season. From wins of small to major races all the information is there for you.

HRNZ MEDIA BITES, MAY 8, 2013Hrnz logo

A big day of racing at Addington has been assembled this Saturday and the scramble for Harness Jewels spots is well and truly on. The meeting on Saturday also heralds the start of a North Island invasion looking towards the Trust Ashburton harness Jewels over Queens Birthday Weekend.

Three way battle for Trotter of the Year? Stig’s win in the Rowe Cup has now created a potential dilemma for Harness Horse of the Year Voters. He, Vulcan and I Can Doosit are all multiple Group 1 winners this season. How the voters weigh up their respective merits will be interesting come Horse of the Year time. This season there has also been a change in the awards categories with there being no 4YO only category. What was the Aged (5YO+) category will now be for horses 4YO and older. This seems sensible given the happenings of the past season, the performances of four-year-old in both the pacing and trotting ranks this term. For the record: Vulcan has won 5 races and $491k; I Can Doosit, 6 races,  $244k; Stig, 5 races and $283k.

Christen Me staying put: Good news for NZ harness fans. Christen Me is taking a break after the Harness Jewels and being set for a long, deliberate build-up to November’s NZ Trotting Cup. The lure of a Group 1 Australasian Breeders Crown race wasn’t enough for connections who can smell a royal chance to win a NZ Cup with their top ranked four-year-old. http://www.hrnz.co.nz/news/1375-nz-cup-the-clear-focus-for-christen-me

Habibti in Aussie: With great opportunities for her as a trotting filly in Australia Habibti looks poised to bypass the Harness Jewels in June. The NSW Trotting Oaks, Derby and Victorian Oaks are all on the top filly’s agenda. An agenda that is most likely going to result in her missing the Jewels. More info can be found here… http://www.hrnz.co.nz/news/1377-harness-jewels-plan-b-for-habibti

Good horses needing cash to secure Jewels spots: There are many examples of good horses that need to earn cash to force their way into the Harness Jewels in a few weeks time. Perhaps the best example is Flying Isa who races in the last at Alexandra Park on Friday night. Though he’s placed second in a Group 1 race this season he languishes 15th on the 4YO Trotters Leader Board. Let’s Elope is another who needs money. He’s currently 9th but there’s some southern four-year-olds capable of leapfrogging him this week. Let’s Elope was in the Kumeu Stakes (G3) but the race was abandoned. He’s now in a $10,000, which means the pressure’s on to perform. He is still in good shape though and likely to head south next week for one last shot to confirm his spot next week. Other renowned horses out of the top 12 right now are Libertybelle Midfrew, Jivin Cullen, Classiesistar and Cheer The Lady (45th).

This Saturday’s stars in the sun: The two big races are going to be cracking affairs this Saturday afternoon at Addington – for differing reasons. The Nevele R Fillies Final (R8, 3.26pm) star Adore Me. She is poised to continue the golden run for Woodlands Stud principal Charlie Roberts who also of course shares in the ownership of Christen Me. Later in the day Allblack Stride gets his first taste of really serious Kiwi competition. From an outside barrier he’ll have his work cut out this week against. While he’s been impressive to date this will be his biggesttest by far. This years edition of the PGG Wrightson Yearling Sales Open (R10, 4.36pm) is one of the deepest ever. Local fans will also get a chance to see wonder trotter Stig in action too. He’s pressing on with his campaign, perhaps in an effort to secure top honours in the trotting ranks this season.

Encore performance from Blitzthemcalder: This Thursday night Waikato race fans will get to see the gun Aussie three-year-old trotter Blitzthemcalder. He takes on a smart field in the Cambridge Trotting Stakes. Blitzthemcalder renews acquaintances with Royal Aspirations who undid himself last week in the Northern Trotting Derby and the latter has been advantaged by the Preferential Barrier Draw. That interesting clash happens at 7.35pm.

Board elections coming up at HRNZ: Thee positions are up for grabs on the HRNZ Board. Aucklander Steve Phillips has completed his two year term and is up for re-election along with South Island Board members Pat O’Brien and Erin Crawford. There has been some talk of fresh faces putting their ‘hats in the ring’ for board positions so the next few weeks, taking the nominations and the ensuing elections will be interesting.

Harness Jewels Fixed Odds: The futures odds for the 2013 Trust Ashburton Harness Jewels are scheduled to be released on Wednesday night.

Top Quality Premier Harness Addington Raceway logo

Action at Addington _ Saturday

Premier Racing at Addington this Saturday has terrific fields carded including some of the best horse flesh in Australasia.

The first feature of the day the Group 2 $60,000 Seelite Windows and Doors Sires Stakes 2YO Championship sees an even contest of talented juvenile trotters. There’s a lot of good form throughout the field with the likes of Daenerys Targaryen, One Over Da Moon, Dieu De L’amour (God Of Love), Trouble Rieu, Schleck and Hot Pants competing for major honours.

Race 6 sees the highly talented and winner of over $500,000 Bit Of A Legend line up, with it only getting better in the following race.

Wasn’t it great to see the mighty trotter Stig take out the Canam Rowe Cup last week at Alexandra Park ?.

He is one of New Zealand’s greatest trotters ever, has been through a three-year injury forced retirement and still comes out and defeats the best squaregaiters we have on offer. Great to have you here Stig at Addington on Saturday.

Then there’s Adore Me. What a freakish filly. She takes her place in the Group 1 $150,000 Nevele R Fillies Final at 3.26pm and you don’t want to miss her. She obliterated her rivals at harness headquarters last Friday night and looks trained to the minute to take out the prestigious fillies event. Drawn wide and with top class fillies Delightful Christian, Rozelski, Splendour, Kabet and Safedra going for gold she won’t have it all her own way. Still, she’s one of the best of her age group and sex we’ve seen and it’ll take a monumental effort from one of her rivals to stop her claiming the trophy.

Just after 4.30pm and the 2yo pacers go for glory in the Listed $225,000 PGG Wrightson New Zealand Yearling Sales 2YO Open.

Great field this highlighted by the boom kiwi bred, Australian-owned and trained Allblack Stride. The good looker was simply sublime winning at Addington recently and is sure to start a warm favourite. From 8 behind the mobile gate and with the likes of Isaiah, Sky Major and Meticulous drawn inside him he’ll want to be on his game. Throw in talented juveniles Cyclone Prince and Regulus from the second line and a keenly fought contest for the big money is sure to take place.

Premier day racing at Addington this Saturday kicks off at 11.30am.

HRNZ MEDIA BITES, APRIL 30

Its Rowe Cup week and the build up to the 2013 Trust Ashburton Harness Jewels is gathering momentum. Lots of interesting bits to talk about in harness racing

  • Alexandra Park this Friday: the current Premier, Classic racing at Alexandra Park may really be about the ushering in of a new guard of top class performers in New Zealandharness racing. Whether it’s the new breed of super trotter or the continued emergence of the dynamic Christen Me, the landscape is changing with a view to the new season, that lies in wait just a few months away. Again, this Friday night hese rising stars will seek fame and riches. Four Group One races highlight a night not to be missed. The culmination of a very good autumn carnival encompasses the Breckon Farms Northern Trotting Derby, Magness Benrow Stakes 2YO Fillies’ Championship, Dawson Harford & Partners NZ Messenger and 2013 Canam Rowe Cup – all at Group One level. 11 races in total at Alexandra Park this week. Race 1 paces away At 5.45pm.
  • Excel Stride not coming: Following a mediocre performance in the Miracle Mile on Sunday at Menangle, Excel Stride, one of Australia’s pacers best is not heading to Auckland to tackle Christen Me and Co. in the Dawson Harford & Partners NZ Messenger. Of last week’s Taylor Mile field, just Easy On The Eye is the fresh runner returning to the fray. His return comes on the back after two disappointing recent showings in NSW where he clearly wasn’t at his best.
  • Royal Aspirations heads home Monarchy trifecta in Sires Stakes: As well as producing a devastating 27.2 second-to-last 400 metres in the Sires Stakes Trotting Championship last week at Alexandra Park, Royal Aspirations helped make it a ‘Monarchy’ trifecta with two other sons Prime Power & Sheemon filling in the minor placings. This success follows on from Monarchy being the most in demand trotting stallion this past breeding season with 80 services.
  • Franco Nelson off to the beach but not for holiday: Robert Dunn is the new trainer of gun three-year-old Franco Nelson. His Spreydon Lodge mentor Steven McRae offered these thoughts following the departure of his stable star. “He’s a valuable horse and you have to do what’s best for him. Being trained on the beach now will give him his best chance.” McRae stated that while there were no serious, debilitating issues with Franco Nelson, the beach will help take the jar out of his rapid legs and that straight–line training will be an aid too. While Robert Dunn will train the horse, with his son John operating the Woodend Beachoperation Craig Thornley will continue to drive the Christian Cullen speed machine.
  • Sam Ottley starring amongst the juniors: Young Lincoln-based junior driver Sam Ottley has sweeping all before her in competition with her peers. The promising reinswoman who works for Colin and Julie De Filippi holds such a domination over junior drivers races in the South Island that’s she’s even holding sway over resident top gun Matthew Williamson in the points race. Ottley will almost certainly be the top qualifier and therefore captain of the South Island team when the upcoming NZ Junior Drivers Champs rolls around On July 4. Ottley has won seven of the 14 junior drivers’ races she’s contested since the start of February and with qualifying cutting off set at June 9 her 16-point lead over Brad Williamson looks pretty secure at this point.

To date this season Ottley has racked up a personal best 31 wins. The support she’s receiving from Canterbury trainers and her burgeoning record suggests there are plenty more in store before the season is out. The most wins in a single season by a woman driver to date is 51 set by Nicky Chilcott in 2002

  • Milestone Watch: Young trainer Gavin Smith’s next training win will be his 100th. The Amberley trainer has made a very promising start to his training career and this will no be the first of many milestones for him. Time to start watching David Butcher’s driving total too. He’s just 43 wins shy of 2000 NZ wins. The 2013 NZ World Drivers Championship rep is on a current schedule to make 2000 around Christmas time. There is also an elite group of trainers not too far off 1000 wins. Cran Dalgety 854, Robert Dunn 852 and Geoff Small 853 are all approaching striking distance of 1000. Then there’s Steven Reid who is wading his way through the 900s, currently sitting on 920 wins.
  • Harness Jewels approaching fast: We’re little over a month away from the 2013 Trust Ashburton harness Jewels. The biggest ever with 12 races combining for a weekend’s worth of top-class action at Ashburton Raceway. Fixed Odds betting on the ‘Jewels’ kicks off next week and more information can be found at www.harnessjewels.co.nz Qualifying cut off for the Harness is at the conclusion of the Oamaru meeting on May 19.
